Buying the same knife more than twice: Do you? Why?

I've seen more than a few posts like this. A Bladeforums member will post a photo of their stash, and they'll have multiple copies of the same knife.

Now, buying two identical knives I can understand. You love it so much, that if you lose or break one, you can replace it immediately--no pesky shipping time or waiting for a store to send a new knife out to you.

I can also understand buying multiple variations of the same knife--I have a few Griptilains with different handle colors, blade types, etc., just because I wanted to try them out--and I love the knife.

So I'm not trying to be insulting in any way. I'm probably not too far off from doing it myself!

But I'm curious, why buy identical knives not just twice, but three times, or more?

because you got the cash, and can't get enough of a good thing :)
or as gifts for future offspring
or for resale in 20 years :)

If I do it....and I do occasionally...it is so I can gift them to friends and family. But I don't hoard knives, nor do I really expect to get rich off of them in the future, maybe my daughter will when she inherits them but that is not why I buy them. I simply enjoy collecting knives.

If I like a Spyderco and it's limited, or discontinued, then I get the chance (good deals, trades) I wind up with a few of them in many cases. I feel I don't get hurt on them. Because they are in demand and can be used to get another desired Spydie down the road.

I buy Busses and often buy two of the same model at a time, one to use and one to keep pristine in the collection, also to have a backup if I lose one or give one away. Certain models also just appeal to me, for example I once owned three of the fourteen Clip Point Natural Outlaw Ergos. The extras can also come in handy for trades, that's where one of my CPNO-E's went.

Just snagged two SFNO LE's, one of them for the purpose of trading for another scarce Busse.

I never buy for resale purposes, as I seem to be able to let go of a Busse only to trade for another I want more.

I buy copies of some models of knives because they're discontinued and a) I really liked that particular design; b) it will become a hot commodity in the foreseeable future (this has happened with such knives as the Yojimbo and Dodo); or c) it's such a great knife that I can't help myself. Then I'll have one for my collection, one for my pocket, and one or two others to give away to people who need a good knife, or to someone I want to share my experience with, like my father.

Because genuine collectors specialize in only one specific area of interest.

I disagree...a genuine collector can focus on a very narrow field such as collecting every variation of a single model or they can collect in a much wider field. Some specialize in a pattern rather than a brand, some are interested in only scale material, others like me collect what they like. all types of collectors are legitimate.

I tend to focus on FB fighter yet I also collect older Ka-Bar slipjoints and any brand of Barlow pattern.

I collect Spyderco Natives. As of today I have 23. Different blade steels, blade types, i.e., plain edge, serrated, colored handles, blade etchings, etc. Most of them are for my collection but I have several duplicates to use.

I've always liked the design of this knife and therefore started collecting them.

I bought 6 different Sebenzas, Classic and Regular with various Unique Graphics and Lisa's Pick designs...because I like them.

Small and Large XM-18's to have one of each.

It's an addiction. :D

I prefer a plain blade knife, but seem to buy a partially serrated knife too.
I work at a Radar Aerostat site and we end up cutting alot of rope. One for work and one for play.

No argument with your statement, but the original question was about why one buys more than two of the same knife.
In which case to hear of a valid reason about why a collector shouldn't be thought of as being "somewhat abnormal" with a buying habit nearing a compulsive behaviour. :-)

Because you like that knife, and want to have more than one of them, perhaps so you can store them in different places and always have one around: your car, your cabin, your kitchen, wherever?

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this sickness! :o

I do that with knives and flashlights. The flashlights get spread around (car, home, emergency kit), but generally the knives stay in one spot, unless I'm carrying them.

With knives, I'm not sure why exactly I collect multiples, but part of it is that I'm afraid they may no longer be availible in the future, so I want to have an extra or two on hand in case I lose my users. I only do that with folders though; for fixed blades I only have singles.

I've bought the same knife (Benchmade Monochrome) about five times. Great beater EDC knife, and I don't care if something happens to it. However I've never bought more than two copies at a time. I've lost a few into the lake, I had one confiscated from me at a concert and after that I bought two copies so I would have one if something happened to my user. Of course now that I have a backup I will never need it, but such is life.

The Spyderco Military comes in enough variations that I couldn't resist. Each time a new one comes out in some fancy steel I just have to have it.

The BG-42 Military is so incredibly smooth (and uses the nearly impossible to get BG-42) that I couldn't stand to EDC it for long, thus when the CPM D-2 version came out I had to snap one up. Then you have the CPM S90V Military, which is the ultimate EDC.

Right now I have money set aside just incase Sal manages an S110V sprint run sometime in 2009.

One to use and one to stash for whatever reason ;) Sometimes to premept a particular knife being discontinued and not be able to get it later.

For custom knives, sometimes I buy whatever is available for pure collecting purposes, especially ones with long waiting times.

For Production/benchmade knives, I like to buy 2, one for use and one for collecting.

Lately, I have been buying multiples of the same knives that I really like for gifting purposes. I have been on an Elephant Toe 'thing' and want to pass these around to people I like and respect.
