Buying the same knife more than twice: Do you? Why?

I really don't like to. I lost my Caly3 awhile back and still have yet to replace it. I have gotten a lot of Spydies since but still, no Caly3. I do make exceptions for knives that are rare and discontinued (I had 4 Manix's and 3 Dodo's at one point) but otherwise no.

Part of the fun in getting new knives is that they are new to you, and since I don't have a huge budget for knives I only get different ones from what I currently have, rather than getting more of a specific model.

When I get a good deal though, I usually buy in pairs.

Well, I have 3 Fällkniven F1s and 'two' ZT300s (301 and 302; 300 is difficult to get in Europe). If I had money I would buy several Fällkniven TK1s and TK5s more as they are such magnificent blades. But for now, I'll save my cash to get a Busse.

I bought backups of several EDC knives - Kershaw Blurs & Leeks, Spydie S30V Natives (WallyWorld!), etc. Usually, it is also a good buy. Now, Buck 110s, they are different. I have many in Custom Shop guise; BG-42, teardrop Damascus, CPM154, S30V, etc, blades; scales from wood to micarta to G10 to water buffalo. I have 'many' basic 110s with 420HC - the Christmas Tins, etc. I can afford them, it is a neat and useful knife that totes well in the pocket. It is a piece of Americana, too. No, you can't field dress a Studebaker, like you can with a Busse, nor is it as slick operating/looking as a Sebenza. In defense, it comes with a sheath and uses a lockback in lieu of a framelock. As said, I can afford them. A collection of Busses/Sebenzas would exceed the GNP of Tchad.

Of course, we have a choice. Okay, maybe some don't... the addiction is difficult to control. "Hello.... my name is John... I'm a knife-aholic!"

I have 3 Spyderco Enduras, with a 4th on the way at Christmas time. I Can't help it. They're just AWESOME!

After you have seen Knives that you like, ether where the company doesn't make them anymore or the company has closed, you'll start buying more than one copy of what you like too.

I have done so in the past, but am now concentrating on building back up since selling all those multiples this summer!:D

What John says..... I'm Big John and I'm a Buck 110'aholic. I did buy a Sebbie this year and it will be my last. I know the ten or so 110's I bought will not be my last. Tomorrow I'm on a field trip to the pawn shops to satisfy my addiction, thanks to Flatlander. :D

Can't have too many Manixes

The only kinfe that I have a duplicate of is a favorite of mine, the HK Mini Auto. I have three. I only intended to buy one back up. I had a local dealer place an order for me. Months passed and I never heard from him. I gave up and ordered one from Blade HQ. A few weeks later I ran into the dealer and he asked me when I'm going to pick up my knife. I didn't get his message that it was in, but it sure doesn't hurt to have three. You never know when a favorite model is going to be discontinued.

But I'm curious, why buy identical knives not just twice, but three times, or more?

My basic go-to knife is the Buck 110, or a similar type from other mfrs., usually all American-made. I have at least twelve, in various places - tool boxes, bug-out packs, etc. Both my wife and my son know how to safely open & close one.

All my others are nice, and most get some use, but I'll buy the 110 clones 'til our money runs out, or the world ends.

thx - cpr

I used to buy a lot of doubles when I was really into Scrapyard and Busse knives because then you could trade for older stuff without paying the aftermarket percentage.
I would also often take trades of knives I already had or was not that into if it was a really good deal. That worked out really well when I needed some cash for an expensive gun purchase and raided the knife cabinet for everything superfluous.

I kind of agree with Girlyman on the "real collectors specialize" statement because
most of the really serious collectors in anything usually end up with a rather narrow specialty. It seems that first people start out grabbing everything they like ,then they get more picky and sell off some knives that they feel are not up to the standards of their other knives. Then they start to really specialize. This seems really prevalent in Busse collectors and fine art collectors.

i usually dont but there are exceptions, the spyderco ti ATR for 1, i really like it, when they were 1st disco'd they were available at a fairly good price, so i now have 3, 2 PE and a SE.

for a while i collected variations of certain BM's, like the 800 series, so i had a lotta similar but not exactly the same knives,

Nice family. Do you have a favorite in the group?

4th from the top, the bottom one is one that I rehandled years (20+) ago, the spring is a little on the weak side now. :grumpy:

Thank you for the compliments,
Jim

I bought Sharade Stockmans when ever I found them on sale. It has been my main edc
for over 30 years. I've lost them, distroyed them, replaced them with new ones. One had an uncomfortable handle and had to replace it with the original . Got one in a stainless model, couldn't sharpen it as easily or as sharp as the carbon steel so replaced that one. I walk the antique malls looking for carbon steal models of this stockman knife so I will have one the next time I lose or break it. I still kick myself for not buying a dozen of these knives when I could. Most usefull knife I have ever owned.
Later I bought a larger model of this knife, and a Uncle Henry version. Both with blade size and shape variations.
