C36TI - Ti Millie

You're comparing MSRP on one knife to street price on the other. This one will have a street price in the $180-190 range. Roger's site says MSRP on the G10/M4 version is $299 with estimated actual price around $220.

No, I am not. I am comparing MSRP as posted on the Spyderco site catalog.

It the street price will be the same on both, than I apologize, but looking at MSRPs, I am not so sure that this will be the case. I sincerely hope that I am wrong...I could probably justify getting one if the price were the same as the G-10.

Apologies, too little coffee and reading too fast. I thought you were comparing the new RIL C36 to the KW version, which is also a RIL with a G10 scale on the off-side and an M4 blade. So, comparing a regular C36 to the RIL version, it doesn't solve any problems at all, other than maybe a bad case of the jones for Ti. :) Here's the knife I (mistakenly) thought you were comparing it to:

Not sure it's intended to "fix" anything. It's simply an advancement of the design using different lock and different materials. Yes it weighs 5.9oz. The G-10 Milllie weighs 4.2oz. Neither seems like a significant weight to me. As far as price goes all Spydercos are priced differently according to materials and designs so why not this one?

Some folks like variety. some don't. It's nice that Syderco can accomodate both.

Good points. I love the Millie I am not trying to bash it, and certainly I appreciate the advances that Spyderco makes (though not all of them are going to be in line with EVERYONE'S ideals).

I guess what I am saying is this one does not fit *ME*...and that is a surprise, because every time a new one becomes available, I feel compelled to rush out and buy. This new feeling is odd to me.

I am fired up for the M4 version, and for *ME* it will be worth some extra coin for the different materials...I hope the weight comes in a bit lower than the TiRIL (obviously it will be higher than the G-10).

The clip is silver. It is a part of normal production. Limited in the sense of how many we can produce in a month.

Maybe it's just a case of "because you asked" (Spyderco is very good about that) or "because we can" (ditto)? Dunno...I do have one on pre-order with a vendor out West... :D

No need, it is all good.

Which I can certainly understand that a lot of people love Ti.

Thanks...I know that link well. I am happy to say I am on the list!

That 48% increase in weight over the CF model doesn't win any points with me. My S90V's pocket space is still secure. :D

I'm betting the huge increase in wear resistance of the S90V version over S30V is going to help keep the CF/90V in your pocket as well.

Yeah...the Ti variant would have seemed a natural for an upgraded blade steel sprint???

No true left handed version, huh? :(

I'm glad it's S30V. Keeps it affordable for students like me. If it had S90V there is no way I'd be able to buy it.

I've seen steel balls wear out too, albeit not on a Spyderco. I'd never heard of this happen on a Spyderco. Ceramic probably would be a good upgrade here.

My guess would be a ceramic detent ball would wear a groove in the blade about as fast as the blade would wear away a steel ball. Especially if that steel ball is of the alloy and hardness I would expect from something that passed Sal's testing. He thinks of these things, you know. ;)

True, it'd be better to have the detent ball at the same or slightly lower hardness. Wearing away the blade too much would be a bad thing.

The knife that I had with a failed detent was an el-Cheapo gerber, probably not engineered quite as well as a Military.

Did you contact Spyderco about the detent ball? From the lack of similar posts your situation doesn't seem to be on ongoing issue so I'm sure Spyderco would be interested.

+1

I am also not a troll or a cheer leader. I would tell you from a design standpoint that I would much rather (intentionally) under-design an easily serviceable part (detentball) such that it wears instead of a primary component that can not be serviced (blade with a groove from over hardened ball).

If the knife is routinely cleaned, serviced, and lubricated, there is a pretty good chance that neither the ball or the blade will wear adversely. If you did that and experienced wear, I would recommend contacting the manufacturer...they would probably be quite helpful.

OK, I have had one pre-ordered for months. When can we expect to actually see it?

Preordered mine on 9/30. After this latest news I'm going to hope for delivery by the end of next week, perhaps the following week but who really knows? In pretty much depends on how many are available to the distributors and where your pre-order is in line.

Once we start seeing posts like, "ordered mine on date such and such and it just arrived" we'll have a better idea of when our individual orders might start shipping.

Anyone know what date Jeff at CS started taking preorders?
