CA Bush Bash III Above Visalia: 4/30-5/2/10

Mark,

I neglected to note that there aren't any tables or other facilities so we usually try to bring stuff like that.

I may bring my nephew with me.

Anyone interested in organizing some skill building exercises? Maybe fire starting or shelter building or something else survival related.

I was making some so-called Egyptian style fire drills when you showed up for the last one. However, I quickly got diverted to the critical tasks of story telling and target shooting!

By the way, the charcloth I made last time was mostly OK except for the top few sheets----which didn't char thoroughly enough. Needless to say, it was the top sheet or two that I tried to use, unsuccessfully. Later attempts with sheets lower in the stack worked.

I think you have a good idea. If you want to pick a topic or two on which to take point, just post it. We should save archery for Mtnfolk Mike, in the event he is able to attend.

hrm....maybe I can make this one. I can't say anything for sure after march 30th.....but I can try

We would love to see you there! With knife guys present, you could probably write off the gas as a business expense?

DancesWithKnives

I'm also hoping that we can persuade John to advise us of a good hiking route that does not require going inside the Park or too much of a drive from camp. We did a little informal bushwhacking last time but a planned route would be preferable.

Well count me in thats for sure. If im lucky enough i might even have my new CZ with me to play with....Besides Mike would need all the help he can get with that Squirrel. Hope to see all the old faces and a few new ones as well..

Sasha

He is quaking on his little paws in fear of your return!:D

Sasha,

Thanks for joining the party! I definitely hope you can bag that CZ in time for the gathering. If you guys double-team him with a classic pincer maneuver, that squirrel won't stand a chance!

what's the range situation? I'll bring the K frame, .22 revolver, savage 1917 and the mauser HSc for sure, but the 870? the mosin nagant?

Christof - I have done a lot of skeet there, as well as pistol. Although it is not ideal for large rifles, I regularly take a mosin or 8mm there.

And I should add that the local wally worlds have had ammo lately, so I will have both 9mm and .45. I will bring my Luger (1940 production WWII issue).

I'm don't think I'm going to bother bringing my .223 rifle this time. I'm with Lambertiana in thinking the shooting area isn't that great for long rifles.

So the 408 CheyTac and the 416 Barrett should stay at home?

Hey i ordered my CZ Lux today and should have it in 10 days. so count me in with a .22 It would be great if mike would help me set up my CZ.. Besides the Squirl need more people to make fun off. So it might be me as well. Got to keep company for mike and that Squirl..

Not if you'll let me shoot them they shouldn't. :)

But you know what I mean. If we were shooting into a real hillside, it'd be great for long guns. But the hill we use ain't that big.

But, it's not like I didn't use my rifle last time, so it's not a big deal.

Sasha: just bring lots of different ammo. That way you can find which one your rifle likes. At 50 yards, bad ammo may get you 1.5" groups while good ammo can get you .25" groups. If you want to go shooting beforehand, you have my email.

Just kidding. I have some friends with exotic hardware like that but I doubt they'd loan them to me or anyone else.

I don't have a true long range rifle. The rifle I shoot at the 700 yd metal plates at our range is an AR10-T in .308 with a Nightforce 5.5-22 x 56 scope. But 700 yds is getting close to the limit of its accurate performance. I almost bought a 338 Lapua wildcat (338 Allen Express) a few years ago but decided I just wouldn't get much use out of it.

I agree that the camp area doesn't have many areas where you can safely shoot over 100 yds. Many centerfire rifles don't get much of a workout at that range. Perhaps a Marlin 44 mag levergun or the like would be an exception.

Hey SconeMeister! At some point in the next month we need to tap your local knowledge for some advice on where to hike without driving too far.

Thanks,
