The Custom Shoppe is up and running. In fact, today is the last day to place an order in time to receive it before Christmas.

Absolutely corrrect. I ordered one today, and my wife is giving it to me for Christmas. :D

Water Buffalo scales, Nickel bolsters, and BG-42 blade.

FWIW, the Buck site shows shipping only to US and Canada -- doesn't say anything about other countries.

The classic 110 is 420HC, which is better than 420j2 by a significant amount

Thanks for currecting me on that. And thanks also for whole lot of great info. :) I think I'm going for Cabela's.

Do I have to be part of the Buck Club to order from the Custom Shop?

No. The Collector's Club is seperate from Buck. I'm not a member of the club and I've ordered 2 knives from the "Custom Shoppe." Anyone can order.

You might want to re-post this on the Buck forum. There are some real nice folks over there and very helpful.

Is the 110 the only one they do regular custom work on? If I could get a slightly smaller knife from them, that would be really cool.

As far as I can tell, the Buck Custom Knife Shoppe is limited to 110s.

Go to the site to check it out. Even if you're not big on 110s, it's kind of fun to try the different combinations. I looked at them for more than a year before I ordered one. The way the site works, it gives you some idea of what the finished knife will look like, and the price.

Does anyone know if the brass on the new 110's still tarnishes like on the old ones?

I have three 110's and a 112 (Ranger), all of which have the usual brass bolsters and wooden scales. Two of the 110's sit on my shelf and don't get handled much, and I'd say the brass finish stays relatively clear and shiny. The third 110 and the 112 are users and, yes, the brass does get a patina (I prefer that to 'tarnish' since it doesn't look bad to me).

The patina is easily cleaned off with metal polish, but it would be a losing battle to remove the patina on a user knife.

In the past Buck has upgraded the blades on their 560 model using the same variety of blades as used for 110 upgrades. The 560 used the same blade as the 110, but had a thinner and lighter titanium handle. I have one with a BG42 alloy blade and I have seen them with ATS-34. The 560 is out of production, but you might find a 560 on ebay or at a pawn shop and get Buck to upgrade it for you. My 560 fits my needs better than a Buck 110. Here is what they look like:

The 560s are nice, but I just don't like metal handles. In fact, I just sold a 560 on eBay recently. Lots of folks have sent them in for blade upgrades though and seem to like them.

Brass is brass. It's going to tarnish, period.

Any metal polish will take off the tarnish in about 30 seconds. Brasso works miracles on 110 bolsters.

If you don't like brass, go the custom 110 route and get nickel silver.

BTW, I don't like the black blade and the red handles on the Cabelas 110. Are there any out there that look like the regular 110, but have the S30V?

And don't cost over a hundred bucks from the custom shop?

The Cabelas 110 in S30V seems to have superior fit and finish to the standard 110 IMO as well. The wood scales seem like maple which is my favorite wood.

I'm not so crazy about the appearance of the blade finish either, but since it's anodized titanium coating, I'm guessing it will lend a tremendous amount of corrosion and wear resistance. Since it's functional and not cosmetic in nature I don't mind it so much.

Ask Joe Houser if they still have BG-42 blades for the 112. I sent in an old 112 and got a BG-42 blade put in it for only $35.

Oh, I do like the 110, it's just that I have issues with school over carrying a knife with a >3" blade.
