Awesome that you got to the Sods. I really want to get back there as soon as I can manage it! :thumbup:
 
Not sure.

Dolly Sods used to be a dense spruce forest. Then it was logged around the turn of the century. Then it caught fire and the peat all burned off and the smoke was said to be visible as far away as DC. Later it was used for grazing, then the gov't got it and intially used it as a bombing range.

So the rock pool COULD be gathered up rocks but I tend to think they are places where the topsoil has never reestablished itself.
