Am in East Los Angeles..
Proud Californian and CA legal collector:

I usually carry either a Dalton or Pro-Tech CA legal auto in my right pocket and a custom, usually a Whiskers, in my horizontal belt sheath-
although right now there's this Terry Knipschield in there:

Awesome! I joined up and added a couple pics.

Never heard of a 3" limit in San Francisco with the exception of the 2.5" state limit for schools.

Doesn't seem much different in California than anywhere else. Pulling out a big knife for a small or unnecessary task under circumstances where it's not expected will always catch attention. Someone sitting in the financial district in a business suit using a strider to open the potato chip bag seems out of place. It's kind of an "in your face" thing by some folks to find excuses to show off the knife.

Probably that's why balisongs and switch blades found themselves banned and restricted, too much potential for "in your face" style intimidation. At least Ca state laws will allow a tiny auto for opening the chip bags.

Did some searching and it looks like I was wrong. Sorry about the confusion to anyone who read my post. There's a post in THIS LINK that states that there is a 3.5" city limit, but I don't see any link to a direct source. MORIMOTOM, a CA cop that's been really helpful with CA knife codes here on BF agreed with him.

HERE are some sources that state that if you're loitering, there is a 3" limit.

Agreed, for the office I carry a little Cripple Creek trapper. A lot of attention, negative or positive will stem from the environment you are operating in.

Hi , So neck knives under your shirt are illegal ? But I can carry my sub 2" auto concealed ? LOL

Yes, definitely. And according to a post I read from MORIMOTOM some time ago, it can be interpreted depending on the officer that open neck carry may not be legal. I think the verbiage for open carry specifies something about carrying around the belt area.

the only one i'm aware of is the 3" folder limit in LA...i see buck 110's in their belt sheaths often...otherwise unless you're showboating your knife around, nobody really gets 'noid about edc'n a knife...

myself, when i remember to put one in my pocket it's usually a 2.5-3 inch folder...

Just to clarify... The school blade length laws only apply to state schools, not private schools. The school I went to allowed 3" knives, fixed or folding.

In my short time living in CA, I carried all kinds of knives. When cruising the city/ urban areas I would cary anything from a 4" folder to a small case peanut depending on what I was wearing/ doing. California state knife laws are not bad at all for folders. I never carried a fixed blade unless I was camping, and that choice had nothing to do with laws, I just preferred to carry small 4"-3" pocket knives most of the time.

Hmm I was planning to use my Izula but I guess thats out of the question...maybe not?

Only if you were planning on carrying it concealed. As long as it's open carry, fixed blades are fine. It's hilarious, I can carry a Cold Steel Espada XL (16.75" overall) concealed, but I have to carry a 1" fixed blade where everyone can see it.

I live in LA and the laws is no fixed blades and all folders must have a blade under 3". Today I'm carrying a CRK Mnandi.

Nope:

In LA County you may not OPENLY carry a knife 3" or larger. Folders are fine as they are not Openly carried...

LA County Code 13.62

Here in east bakersfield its not unusual to see someone with a pocket knife
me i carry one of the following sage 1 delica ffg or g10 dragonfly

I dont know about what theomegaman said, but I do know that you can openly carry a large knife in LA county as long as you are: going to, in the middle of, or coming from and outdoor recreational activity that would have required a knife -like camping or hiking.

I typically either an Umnumzaan, Spyderco Sage II, Large Sebenza, or a Spyderco Military. Never had any issues and I live in the Sacramento area. As long as you are not doing anything dumb by flashing it around in public there should not ba a problem. In December I was going into the Socical Security office to deal with stuff from my dad passing away and forgot I had my Military when I went through the metal detector. The police officer on duty laughed and said "looks like you need to take this back out to your car". Ran it back outside and no problem after that.

"Any person, except a duly appointed peace officer as defined in Chapter 4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of Title 3 of Part 2, a full-time paid peace officer of another state or the federal government who is carrying out official duties while in this state, a person summoned by any officer to assist in making arrests or preserving the peace while the person is actually engaged in assisting any officer, or a member of the military forces of this state or the United States who is engaged in the performance of his or her duties, who brings or possesses any dirk, dagger, ice pick, or knife having a fixed blade longer than 21/2 inches upon the grounds of, or within, any private university, the University of California, the California State University, or the California Community Colleges is guilty of a public offense, punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year, or by imprisonment in the state prison. [Ed. Note: This paragraph covers colleges and universities. There is still a ban on large fixed-blades, but large locking folders legal under Penal Code 653k are completely legal. This applies to any adult age 18 or over on campus, student or otherwise; there are exceptions for work-related stuff in part "C" through "G" below.]"

Im ok.

^Interesting! I apologize if I was incorrect about carrying in private universities. However, I can assure you that it was listed in my student handbook that my school allowed the possession of a knife on campus, fixed or folding, with a blade of up 3 inches long. One of my professors carried a good size blade around 3 inches and so did I. Even our public safety officers condoned the carry of knives up to three inches.

It's fine, it may just be an unenforced law at your school. It is just half an inch longer and I would assume that they don't take a ruler out an measure every knife they see. Did your professor or you carry a fixed blade or a folder?

^He carried a folder, and so did I. I could never get a good look at what folder he was using since I only saw him use it from my seat, but it looked like a gerber, or maybe a CRKT. I carried a Spyderco salt 1, Kershaw Leek, Kershaw chive, or other similar knives that I have since traded, and I always had my SAK on me.

My freshman year, my roommate and I were actually searched by public safety for having little get together (too much noise). They found my roommate's gerber and measured it to make sure it was under 3" and it was so they gave it back before they left. It was just a tad under 3" definitely over 2.5"

It is an old school, so I would not be surprised if the student handbook was created before the state law on knives. Or maybe they overlooked the law when they made the handbook?

It's interesting how varied the CA laws are, as well as peoples interpretations of them.
I live in West Los Angeles, and EDC a 3 7/8" Mil-Tac MTF-1 folder most of the time, and a 3" Spyderco Street Beat fixed-blade on occasion, and have never been hassled.
I had a local (Culver City P.D.) cop check-out my folder, show it to his partner, told me it was a "cool knife" and handed it back to me. No problem.

I was at Disneyland a few months ago, and saw a guy with a clip on his pocket. I was thinking about asking him what knife it was, but since there were so many other people around, I decided not to.

I attend a cluster of liberal arts schools in Southern California. I once saw some guy in a discussion section with his Gerber Paraframe (or so I think it was) clipped outside his pocket. Funny, I thought carrying a knife in that manner doesn't do any good in the name of pocket retention. I had a ZT0301 with me at that time, but I've moved onto lighter blades.
