California Fires

The Watch Duty app is good for monitoring areas and comms. There's a layer for cams as well that will show live and time lapse up to 12 hours back.

The wind in the mountains here in SD county have been in the 50-70mph range the last few days at least. Fire will just tear through an area with that help.

The winds are unreal. I don't think many folks realize how insane those winds are and how impactful they are to fires. My thoughts are with our brothers and sisters to the south and I hope that this gets under control quickly so the rehabilitation can begin.

Hats off to the folks here for keeping it classy, CPK folks are the very best. Discourse in some other circles has frankly been rather disgusting.

Lots of people with lots of opinions, none of that really matters when real people are in harms way. Whether it's hurricanes, wild fires, mud slides... seems some people only want to talk about it when lives are at stake. I have a new appreciation for this since moving to Florida.

God bless everyone in harms way and do whatever it takes to come out the other side of this with you and your family safe.

Hope everyone stays safe out there in CA! My SIL and her husband are in Ojai and on pre-evac orders.

We had a big wildfire (2nd worst in CO state history) here a couple three four years back that was VERY wind-driven. It was called the East Troublesome Wildfire.

Wiki
and
NPR story

It burned through parts of Rocky Mountain National Park, and the winds were so bad that it crossed the continental divide!!! Yes, embers jumped over 1.5 miles (as the crow flies) above timberline, over the top of the ridge, and down to the trees on the other side! How crazy is that??? "In less than a day, the East Troublesome burned more than 120,000 acres, making it by far the most rapid-fire expansion in state history."

A good buddy nearly lost his cabin that we spend time at every year (going in 2 weeks!). Firefighters stopped the fire in that area at the top of the hill from his place, not even 350 yards away. Another friend of mine who is a fishing guide and firefighter lost everything. 😭 It completely burned one of the best and most extensive snowmobile/atv trail areas in the state, one that I loved to ride in. 😢

Wildfires don't fuck around, especially when there's hurricane-force winds driving them!!! :poop:

Where do all those people go once the embers cool? Thousands of residences gone - safe human habitation in the desert - that no longer exists.
Insurance is supposed to cover this, but how much will they choose to cover, and do they even have the $$$ on hand to cover it?
If you do get a settlement, is it going to realistically be sufficient enough to build a new home in LA, or is this a guaranteed future gentrification area?

To me, it's simply too staggering to even contemplate.

I’m in LA but luckily we are in the South Bay by the airport and are so far unaffected minus air pollution. I used to live in Pasadena when I worked at JPL and after that in Santa Monica and have several ex coworkers that have lost their homes and a few that are hoping their homes are there still … heartbreaking . Insurance companies are already bailing and it’s pretty unclear what will happen after this ..

Eerily similar to the situation in my home town of Fort Myers after Hurricane Ian a few years ago .

We’re here if anyone needs a hand or help during these times

Apparently, at least some of the fires were intentional. Some residents tackled a guy , zip-tied him, and the cops scooped him up. Will be interesting to see if the residents get sued. Regardless, hopefully any lingering copy cats looking to get off will take some heed and go self immolate somewhere else.

One of my sons in law is a firefighter here and is deploying to LA with his crew today. What a tragedy out there.

We're sending 12 teams (240 firefighters and 60 fire engines) as well. Seems like a lot but it never seems enough in the face of such a catastrophe.

(Edit: I neglected to mention that I hope your son-in-law stays safe)

Taken by a friend of my daughter’s. My daughter was out there literally the day before the fires started. Some of the places they visited while she was out there are gone now. Crazy.

Definitely a little stressful out here right now. I’m in Los Angeles, Hollywood area, I can see the Hollywood sign from my apartment - it’s not burning, the hill / canyon behind it did though. These fires are popping up all over the place right now. Bone dry, record winds and quite a bit of panic isn’t helping. I have upmost respect fir the amount of Firefighters holding things steady as best they can.. We put celebrities on a pedestal while people who are actually doing the life or death stuff go unseen.. crazy. I know a few people who’ve lost their homes.. horrible. I don’t know what’s worse , the fires or the people’s reaction to the fires.. people are terrified. One thing that’s become clear to me - I wasn’t even close to being as prepared as I thought I was. Appreciate all you guys / gals - thank you for kind comments. I’ll try to get some pictures as these fires don’t seem to be slowing anytime soon.

UF is definitely staying on me. Stay safe wherever you’re at. We got evacuation orders on Tuesday, they allowed us back Wednesday. Bags packed.. ready to roll.
