Call for Charpy toughness samples

If all of our testing yields good results we should have pretty good information on the effect of cryo treatments and upper vs low temper.

If you get odd results on any condition, let me know and I’ll do another set or two of samples. I’m finding this steel pretty consistent from batch to batch. Not quite as consistent as S35VN, which comes out at the identical Rc# every blade, but I rarely see variation above one Rc point.

Why are we not testing S35VN?

I don’t have any thick enough. I can add it to my list with 3V for my next order.

S35VN at Rc60, and Rc63. Maybe cryo vs. Dry ice too.

Larrin, do you have access to a steel analyzer? I have a vintage grader blade that I would like to have tested. I was quoted $250.00 locally.

US Steel has them but I don’t. A good OES is very pricey.

Larrin, are you sure your dad is going to want to surface grind that many samples for me? I’m ok with cutting them out and heat treating them.

What would be interesting is forged vs non forged tests lol

All steel is forged unless it is as-cast.
But drop forging/closed die forging is supposed to increase toughness even more, due to grain orientation, correct? If everything is equal, steel type, heat treatment. I hope I’m not opening a can of worms!

We are using longitudinal samples, which has the highest toughness. Other orientations would be worse.

My m390 came in a rectangular sheet. I’m sending x and y axis sample so I can figure out which direction is which.

So when we forge blades we are orientating the grain the correct direction. But stock removal could have the grain running the wrong direction making it weaker, hum interesting ;). I knew there was a reasion I stood in front of that fire bellowing monster with Hammer n' tongs in hand ready to do battle.

M390 and 20CV are in the oven now.

I found a few small chunks of 0.108” 3V. I should be able to make one or two conditions for next week.

I went to the shop today to H/T the AEB-L coupons only to find that my thermocouple is toast. I'll order a new one Monday and get them done as soon as I can. Sorry guys.
