Calling all Benchmade Griptilian owners

It depends on what you are doing.. I get my CPM D2 dull every week..
If it were softer.. Then even more so..
It should be fine for your uses..
Matt

i have used my D2 grip to open everything from MRE's to cardboard to plastic. i wouldnt say that i have abused it, but definitely made it work hard

A Grip is simply one of the best production knives made, no matter how you slice it. Buy one with confidence.

UGH! Why do all thier coated grip have a combo edge???

They don't.

The PE edge profiles for the BT coated blades have almost always been in production, they're just never listed in the catalog for some reason and are produced in more limited quantity.

Back OT: My 550 has held up pretty well. I EDCed for a few months with the usual variety of tasks from light use to hard use and have no complaints. It did get a little rust on the lockbar after a few weeks working the dishpit but overall I was happy with it. It's one of the older ones with 440C, I must say that the steel has been excellent. It takes a really keen edge very easily and holds it for a long time. I much prefer it over 154CM.

I love my grip. Worst damage was a bit of chipping (very minor) from cutting vegetables on a concrete picnic table. Buffed out after a while, and is still going strong.

Not only does it perform well, I think the Grip is damn good-looking as well. No-nonsense serious business knife.

I have a 556 that I've used as a work beater for a year or so. It's been used for everything, from cutting cardboard to shaving down edges carpenetry projects, to cutting brush back and digging in the dirt, to shaving PVC pipes. I even hit a metal pole with it and rolled the edge, which came right out with a kitchen steel and a little sharpening.

I've never had a lockup failure, and it still hasn't developed any blade play from the near zero it had out of the box.

Nice old school grip. 440C, Oval 550HG (round now), coated blade. Looks good. I bought a plain edge BK(black) 551 2 weeks ago. As you said, they are just harder to find. Benchmade's big distributors have them on and off through the year.
i stabbed mine through an empty CO2 canister. it was fine
Dude, that's just sick man.:D

So I guess I shouldn't be afraid to use it. My biggest fear is chipping or damaging the blade. I get chills thinking about it because i can't work them out, been there done that. I can sharpen well though. I'm wondering how the handles hold up and how much maintenance the thing needs also. My crkt m-1603 needs a lot of maintenance and so do some of my saks.

I use mine(551 Grip PE 440C) for work, sometimes carry it when I'm not working. Cutting plastic, straps, cardboard, food ect. Had mine about 8years, had the blde change about 3 years ago, did'nt care for the modified sheepfoot with the oval hole. It's an excellent all around knife, I have a few more plus a couple of mini-grips. Only downside is when the the springs go, you have to send it in for repair, one spring will still work. That's why I have a few Grips for backup when that happens but very rarely, had to send it in twice for the blade change & springs the 8 years I had it. Love this knife. Thanks Gary

:)

I carry the 550HG in my firejacket and have accidentally dropped it from chest height onto a tarmac road surface. The handle got a minor scuff, which I know I could sand out if I wanted to.

Noryl GTX is light and strong..and Grippy!

If you strop and/ or steel the knife regulary, it should hold up that long.

Im just worried about ruining the blade to the point where i myself cant repair it.

You're really worried about that? Why? I mean, it's pretty simple to not abuse a knife to the point of ruining a blade. Just, well, don't abuse the knife to the point of ruining its blade.

Not a high maintenance knife! Had mine a few months now. Have not done any maintenance to it except tighten the pivot. Thats it. the handles are good stuff! It is NOT plastic! it is stronger! Buy a grip! You will use it hard and it will not let you down. One of the best sellers for benchmade and one of the best knives ever!

I got the 550hg. I use it for hunting mostly. Love it!

I've been using the 550 combo edge at work for the past 5 years or so. Great knife that has never let me down. I've used it for everything, even stuff it shouldn't be used for, like prying and such. Some of the black finish has been worn off, but I think of the scuffs as 'badges of honor' showing that the knife is being used, and used well.

I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another for work, when and if this one dies, but I don't see that happening any time soon. I would like to find a 550 with black coating and a plain blade, but they seem to be hard to locate. There is something about the modified sheepsfoot blade with the oval hole that just speaks to me.

The 440C steel sharpens up quick, and holds its edge for a long time. I had a buddy at work borrow the knife to do some cutting, and he remarked that it was really sharp. I told him "It's supposed to be sharp. It's a knife. That's like having the world's greatest supercomputer but not having electricity to run it."

Accidents happen. The blade slipping when you cut something. Not being able to see something abrasive on something you're cutting. I try and keep my knives in as good of shape as i can, but accidents do happen.

What Blop said. I don't let it get too dull, touch it up once in awhile & it should be good to go. Gary

Man, if this thread doesn't make you want to buy a Grip then I don't know what will! I recently sold my last one but just ordered another after reading this thread.

Really, when you think about it there just isn't a better knife for the price. Maybe some equals all things considered, but none better.

Yeah, I have the same knife as you, O.P., the 551S, and have run it through the works...cutting all kinds of rope, twine, line, branches, made shavings for tinder, split sticks lengthwise for kindling, carried it through Mt. Washington, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, and in 10 days, Zion Nat'l Park in Utah...it's the best all-around folder you can get without refinancing your home for a Sebenza...

Anybody besides me find the pocket clip a bit loose? I could (before modding) see right through where its supposed to clip onto your pants. So what I did was i took the clip off, put a cloth around it, put it in a vice and tweaked it to my liking. It now sticks in my pocket and will never come out. I love it. Also, i sharpened it up and cleaned inside it and relubed it with hoppes lub. oil. Loctited everything up and now its amazing.
