Got pics? How do you carry your Large choppin Busse's?

I just got a Granite Gear Blaze AC 60 and am trying to figure out how/where to attach a sheath so I can carry my FSH comfortably for mountain hikes and still be able to access it without having to take off my pack.

I tried having it strapped to the side mesh pockets, but I can't reach it without taking off the pack.

So, seasoned Backpacking Hiking Hogs, what is your experience with hiking and carrying larger chopping Busse's?

Thanks,
-Ed

I carry my chopping size Busses in the truck. I am not going to actually wear one of those things.

I made a kydex sheath for my ruck and one for my AK. I don't ever bring both at the same time, though it's tempting. I attach the sheaths to my kifaru using two tekloks angled at about 30° so the handle tips slightly forwards over my right shoulder. I can draw it fast, Ninja's beware.
No pix, sorry, I don't have a mirror so I can only imagine how bad ass I look and there is no one here to take a picture of me. I suppose everyone is too afraid to come close. When I sleep outdoors I use the pack as my pillow and still have access to the sword/knife.
May the force be with you.

I almost always keep mine inside my pack. I only wear a sheath when I'm going to be using the knife a lot and I'm with knife people or not around people at all.

lost mountain iron works sheath.
got several setups, but for a day hike i usually carry it on the side of my butt pack, attached with a teklok for easy removal. i usually prefer a lower ride if i want to carry on the belt, so i just attach it to a dangler and snap that on my belt if i want to carry that way. also if i'm carrying a backpack, they usually have some mounting on the front of the shoulder strap if you want to carry inverted, tip over the shoulder style

I backpack with a Kifaru Zulu and carry my B11/Mistresses in one of the slot pockets on the outside of the pack - quick access while keeping it secure.

On my Zulu I have a molle waistbelt and my NMSFNO or Squatch will ride attached to that via a kydex sheath with a molle back attachment added from one of my ESEE knives. Works like a charm.

Good thread...I too am interested. For most shorter/day hikes, I just take a Maxpedition Jumbo Versipak, easiest thing to do would be to simply belt the knife on the opposite side, however, a rig offering more carry options would be nice. For some time, I've been wanting a multi-carry sheath that could do either side belt carry or alternatively torso carry. I'm still searching. In the mean time, for mid-sized Busse (~6" blades), if you don't opt for a custom rig, the SpecOps is a decent general purpose rig for the $$.

Molle Lok's attached to a Kydex sheath (in this case, a Mashed Cat).

Allows carry with any molle backpack. In the picture below, my Hog hunting setup with the B-11 attached to the back of my SOTECH Hydration Harness. SS4 sits up front, at the 2 o'clock position.

B11 like this but upside down so I can draw it with either hand.

Yeah, I tried out back mounting, but with a full pack, it's difficult to resheath, chances of cutting the pack or compression straps. That and not being fully straight into the kydex, it catches easily, and doesn't go in smoothly.

I never had a problem with a hog yet, but I generally see one on every other hike. I am more worried about getting to it fast than resheathing fast.

This is how I used to roll.

I don't carry anything large while hiking anymore though.

My big chopper (though not a Busse) is carried in a drop down leg sheath with a swivel at the upper point of attachment so it does not bind up when I sit down, and a length of paracord at the tip of the sheath that I tie around my leg just above my knee. This works great because with my arm hanging naturally at my side, my hand is just a few inches from the knife handle, and with the drop down from my belt, the knife is out of the way of anything else on my belt. I don't like attaching the knife to my pack because when I stop on a hike for a longer break or for lunch or to set up camp, I usually take my pack off, and I may wander a short distance away from my pack, and then I feel just too knifeless. A big chopper is handy when setting up camp or working up a bit of firewood, so why would I want it attached to my rucksack?

Dude, that FSH weighs nearly as much as your pack.

Since the Blaze lacks a traditional compression strap, your best bet is a tek-lok or molle-lok attached to the top webbing strap on the waistbelt, the one that is bar-tacked. If you don't want to attach it to your pack, a drop loop will work fine. Another option would be inside the side mesh pockets. Or buy a pack with more straps.
