Calling all Hiking Hogs, how you carry your large Busse's

I've been too lazy to order kydex for my Busse NMFBM, NMSFNO, and BJ...so I've simply stuffed them into my Maxped pack with only the original cardboard covering the blade. I feel naked without a heavy chopper by my side during a hike.
It's also easy to attach (most) sheaths to a pack via paracord.

huntbomb, I have wrapped the factory cardboard with gorilla tape on a few occastions. makes a pretty decent and safer sheath till you get one. use alot of tape too.

Every knife I own that Dosnt have a sheath has a very well done one made of ducktape and electrical tape- I'm very good at it myself:D

Just my 2cents

I have attached with tech lock to the hip strap. The tech lock is nice because if you ditch the pack some where, for a break, you can simply attach the thing to your belt. Only takes a second or two. I have done the same with my FBMLE and had the Ashcg on the other side.

I have done this several times till I make a leather sheath, or buy a kydex one. I use heavy duty shipping tube flattened, and done up with gorilla tape. One, I made as a temporary sheath for my KZII, I had to run over the cardboard about 10 times with my car to get it flat enough. It was stiff enough that a 350 lb guy jumping on it would not do the trick!!!!

Make a loop of sticky side to sticky side, and attach it down the back with more gorilla tape, and you even have a belt loop!

Just the cardboard sleeve is very dangerous. You can seriously injure your self, or even kill your self with just the cardboard sleeve if you fall on the pack!!!!

Here is mine. It is a LMIW sheath with all kinds of stuff packed into it, along with a Victorinox multi-tool on the back. You can see why I don't wear it on my belt.

It's too bad that LMIW is gone. :(

Yeah, a Dundee or Sling rig looks tempting. Perhaps some way to secure it so it doesn't swing around, but makes it detachable and wearable when the main pack is not worn.

What sheath is that green one with the CGFBM?

I sure looks like its a SpecOps sheath (Long?) carrying perhaps a FSH...but I could be wrong.

Also, unfortunately, looks like LMIW is outta biz.

My FBM seems to be perpetually on loan, and I don't have a FSH any more. I would carry one if I had it. My BATAC was my constant companion, but is with my oldest son now, so it will be my MUK and the BJLE when it comes back home. I need another FSH though.

I carry my mistress in my backpack, but I always have something on my side. Lately it's been the BJLE.

Hey, this is a great thread topic!

It took me ages to figure out a system that would work for me. After a lot of experimenting I worked out a very simple rig. But first here are the steps that lead me to my simple carry method. You'll kick yourself on how simple it is.

I tried the idea of strapping it to the backpack belt but sometimes it got in the way or I would constantly knock it while walking. If it was a heavy pack with a few days food and gear then the sheath would start to get annoying.

I tried strapping it to the main pack compartment itself and I had the same problem as others in that it was very difficult to reach and even more difficult to re-sheath without taking the pack off to see and reach it.

I experimented with strapping it to one of the shoulder straps. Right handed person with the knife strapped to the left shoulder strap. This works but still had one problem, as a lot of people have pointed out, if you put your pack down for a break, your momentary knifeless unless you unhook if from the pack and place it on your own belt (provided you wearing one)

Unhooking from the pack to place on your own belt repetitively was very annoying. And if you put your pack down you could get caught with your pants down (knifeless) when a bear or any big animal causes you to bolt. No pack means no knife. Yeah, I know some of you might think running from a bear is a bit far fetched or unrealistic but if you loose you pack for any reason it still means your knifeless. Also imagine having to walk back to your pack each time you wanted to cut something. A pain in the a-- isn't it. So I scratched that idea.

Like many others I consider my knife to be a very important outdoor tool which I would rather keep near me when I need it. The knife had to be on me. I liked the idea of a simple strap to just sling it under one arm like a gun holster style but it would get in the way of the should strap of the pack and would be a bit annoying while swing my arm when walking.

I like wearing my knife on my belt at my lower back with a cross draw style. But you can only use a very short or small pack that rides high on your back while wearing the knife in cross draw position otherwise the knife itself would get in the way.

I also tried the dangler style from the belt on the side and tie the sheath tip to just above the knee. It did tend to 'walk' along the belt backwards or forwards a bit and felt a bit weird initially tied to my leg but you got used to it. Being low slung it cleared the pack belt. This method actually worked for me. I guess I could of tied the belt loops down to stop them from walking.

Finally I used a single simple soft webbing belt (1 1/2" wide) with a fastex buckle and wear it cross draw style but this time from the front and across the left shoulder. I don't have a picture but it looks exactly like way as the Jake character in the Avatar movie wears it across his chest. I would slide the buckle to the front just above or below the knife. That way it won't get in the way of the main pack or day pack and still be comfortable.

The knife draws like it was strapped to the left should strap of the pack but the difference is it's always with you regardless on where you put your pack. You can actually see it rather than potentially having it fall off your pack and never knowing it. Another benefit is that if your in your vehicle you can still wear it without it getting in the way of the car seat. You should still be able to drive with it without any problems.

The only draw back, no pun intended, is that this method works best with a medium to small fixed blade. I personally would stick to the side dangler method for larger blades.

Otherwise I'd take a quality folding knife with a good pocket clip!

Sorry if I waffled on way too long but you never know, this might be useful to someone.

Cheers, AB.

There is an easy fix for this “predicament”. In addition to a fixed blade I have a folder in my pocket.

great thread! really enjoying the pics too, try to post some of my own later.

I've never been able to find just one configuration for all conditions. i usually keep it strapped to the side of my pack and transition the mounting to what works best for me at the time.
I'll be keeping an eye on this one for ideas.

Me too, and a multitool and a flashlight and a lighter and a hankie and a phone. Cargo pants FTW.

That is a FSHH in a large Spec-Ops Survival sheath.

I recently posted a specific thread inquiring about this very thing.

If you don't mind me asking, what mods, if any, were required to make that rig work for ya? How'd it work over all?

Thanks in advance.

There is molle on the back of the sheath, that can be used to attach to a belt etc.

I backpack with a Kifaru Zulu and carry my B11/Mistresses in one of the slot pockets on the outside of the pack - quick access while keeping it secure.
.

I miss my Zulu.....I used to carry my Heavy Heart that way...also had a folding saw in the other side, loved it.

I swear, everytime I see those pics Sumo, a little piece of me dies inside!!! I gotta have me one of them sheaths!!!!!
