Calling all Hiking Hogs, how you carry your large Busse's

The only large Busse I carry is a ZT BM-E that I bought from a friend here on the forum. I HATE having to hump around a large piece of steel; very daunting for long distances. The ZT rides in a nylon in my pack, along with the other usual camping & "SHTF" items

Molle Lok's attached to a Kydex sheath (in this case, a Mashed Cat).

Allows carry with any molle backpack. In the picture below, my Hog hunting setup with the B-11 attached to the back of my SOTECH Hydration Harness. SS4 sits up front, at the 2 o'clock position.

I love that set up. Nice and simple. I notice you are a lead farmer and that you carry a blow out kit. :)

Here are a couple pictures of how I carry my NMFBM LE. Remember that I am a lefty. I can easily reach behind and access my favorite chopper! Since I took these photos, I did shorten the attachment lines and the rings. These were taken as I was experimenting with lengths and attachment options. But it shows the basic idea.

Hmmm. I guess that could make attaching to a buttpack interesting, for scout carry style.

I did try that attached to my belt, but resheathing quickly was difficult.

Hey, this is a great thread topic!

It took me ages to figure out a system that would work for me. After a lot of experimenting I worked out a very simple rig. But first here are the steps that lead me to my simple carry method. You'll kick yourself on how simple it is......

.....Finally I used a single simple soft webbing belt (1 1/2" wide) with a fastex buckle and wear it cross draw style but this time from the front and across the left shoulder. I don't have a picture but it looks exactly like way as the Jake character in the Avatar movie wears it across his chest. I would slide the buckle to the front just above or below the knife. That way it won't get in the way of the main pack or day pack and still be comfortable.

Otherwise I'd take a quality folding knife with a good pocket clip!

Sorry if I waffled on way too long but you never know, this might be useful to someone.

Cheers, AB.

You know that's a great way to carry with a shoulder sling cross body. It's actually a pretty old way of carrying a knife.

Here's an interesting approach to securing the knife with a shoulder sling.

There is an easy fix for this “predicament”. In addition to a fixed blade I have a folder in my pocket.

I totally agree with you there. I usually carry a small spyderco on my keyring which is always with me in my pocket.

What do they say? One is none and two is one.

A backup is always good.

I didn't know it was an old method of carry. I just experiment and sort of re-invented it for myself. I can imagine the the north american indians carrying it this way. After all the Avatar movie was sort of based on the north american indians.

The Sunrise rig is interesting. Sort of a holster rig with the under arm strap.

I just use a single strap which means that it is simpler and I can take it on and off faster.

Without modification I can instantly reposition it for crossdraw from the back to the front. Either along the waist or over the shoulder. And left or right handed. Also, a handy feature while wearing it without your pack is when you want to lay down on you back for a snooze you can just slide the knife along the webbing strap to the front and vice versa if you need to lie on your front (say when you need the take a shot in a prone position). Hence, the reason for using it's own webbing strap rather than putting it on your belt. This also means that you have your fixed blade on you when you snooze. How many people have awaken from a nap half asleep and walked away accidentally leaving something behind. I get mad at myself if I loose something from a silly mistake.

I can sling it over the shoulder with the knife at the back like the sunrise but I find it more difficult to re-sheath the knife (when I'm not wearing a pack).

Since your original post was about carrying the knife while wearing a pack then I like to sling it over the shoulder with the knife on the front. (handle pointing downward)

If you like you can have the handle pointing upwards. Less chance of the knife falling out. That works as well.

Oh, there's one last thing I should add. My knife is a modified CG ASH1 which I consider to be a medium size. This simple rig comfortably carry's that rather heavy lump of INFI steel with ease. I can walk and hike with it over the shoulder but I can run and jump with it on my waist.

LOL, well yes. I always carry a good folder or two. Depending on the pant pocket space, I carry my Benchmade 805-1101 TSEK, and the very lightweight 530 (S30V REI one). So I'm not at a loss for kick ass slicers, but nothing really beats a Busse for pure chopping performance.

And in the bag I usually have a back up folder or two.

But Big Busse's are trickier to carry. I'm beginning to second guess getting one. :(

Almost all leather sheaths will slide on the lower section so you can carry many different big knives there. You can then just tie them down to your leg. To connect a teklok just have a leather strip sewn onto the same area. The chest straps have snaps so you can carry leather or kydex sheath on your chest. D-rings for carabiner or lanyard, etc. connection. i can even carry my XD9 sub-compact there.Cellphone too. Very comfortable. You don't even feel the weight of the big knives. I wear it outside the straps on my pack. Your big knife can always be w/ you and you can sit, cross rocks, etc. very comfortably.

It's too bad that LMIW is gone. :(

Yeah, a Dundee or Sling rig looks tempting. Perhaps some way to secure it so it doesn't swing around, but makes it detachable and wearable when the main pack is not worn.

I made this baldric rig. The strap might be too thick to comfortably wear under a pack all day though. I could use a much thinner leather and it would still be plenty strong........ but heck, I'm never gonna find another horse harness strap for that price (saddlery shop went out of business).

I have a paracord threaded in the loop on the back of the sheath. I tuck it through my belt, and then slide the sheath through the loop. This keeps the sheath from swinging forward when kneeling to pick stuff up, or start a fire or what ever I am doing. Still very quick on and off. Slide the sheath up and out and bingo.

With the sheath on the hanger, you can still run a belt, or tie to the belt, or even belt loop if you are not wearing a belt. I have done a belt in the back, and have even worn a gun belt through it, with a gun on the off side (which has the added benefit of allowing the gun belt to be looser than your pants belt to hang "just right."

But the paracord loop through the belt, and then the sheath slid through the loop is the easiest, quickest way to wear it, and still be able to take it off instantly.

My FBM seems to be perpetually on loan, and I don't have a FSH any more. I would carry one if I had it. My BATAC was my constant companion, but is with my oldest son now, so it will be my MUK and the BJLE when it comes back home. I need another FSH though.

Uh... Could you loan me something :D

Well, it certainly seems we have a finite number of options available. Truth be told, Busse owners probably only represent a fraction of a percent of field knife toters, and aftermarket production sheath makers isn't exactly a booming/flooded market.

What I would really like would be a SpecOps-style belt sheath that could also be attached directly/easily to the shoulder/chest strap of a veripack-style bag. For my use, that would be near ideal.

And a nice custom leather belt rig of course.

But this is still a good thread to keep running.

I made this kydex dangler for my B11. It attaches to the belt with a large Tech-lock and has webbing that adjusts the length of drop and can be easily removed from the dangler and leg tie down via the fastech buckles. Molle locks are allso placed so that it can be placed on the pack, if desired. Either the Hog Muk or Swamp Warden can be piggybacked. This setup rides low enough to clear my pack or sidearm and moves with the leg to allow you to sit down. The Swamp Warden is the usual setup and then the Hog Muk rides in a crossdraw on the belt.

From today.

Tend to carry my larger knives in a drop-leg sheath with an equalized pivot-point:

Pouch opens to the front, which means the top opens when kneeling/sitting...

Just simpler for me.
