Calling all Spydie users. What's my next backpacking folder?

Alright guys n' gals, it's that time of year when my wallet has a spare hundred in it and my mind forces me to peruse Amazon every night.

So here's my predicament. I'm interested in picking up a new Spyderco for use as a general utility/edc knife and, more importantly, as a backpacking folder. I already own a Delica 4 FFG and H1 Salt so the list of potential purchases have been narrowed down to the Endura 4 FFG or Manix 2 LW. I'd usually carry my Delica for the two afformentioned roles but would like something that's more capable as a food prep knife.

As of now I'm a bit partial to the Manix 2 for its blade shape and fuller handle but am a little hesitant about the CTS BD1 steel. What are your thoughts on BD1 compared to VG10? Could one knife handle more abuse? Is there another spydie I'm overlooking (that's around the $100 mark)? Looking forward to the discussion!

Sorry but you won't like my answer.
First, I have the Manix LW. Nice knife. I don't know about the BD1 but good steel is good steel . . . I wouldn't worry about that.
For me the Manix is too short for food prep.

I would, even though I don't own one, YET, for back packing I would save up and get a full size Military.
Oh yah.

PS: for instance I have a Cold Steel Ti Lite 4 (blade flat ground much thinner for EDC and food prep). The blade is four inches. It is barely long enough. I find my Cold Steel Hold Out I, a six inch blade, MUCH BETTER FOR FOOD PREP ! ! ! !
It is a dream. Bigger the better (up to a point).

I'd go with the M2 LW. Maybe consider the blue LW with S110V steel? Regardless, I have 2 M2 LW's with BD1 and several knives with VG10. Both seem very similar to me. Both are easy to get very sharp and both are very stainless. So they work well (for me) for food prep.

If I had to choose between BD-1 and VG10 I'm going VG10 all day long. BD will dull VERY quickly!!
If you like the Manix, as I do...I have 5....go for the s30v and G10. Excellent all around performer!! Lot of fun to flick too!!
If you're stuck on LW, go with the s110v with the dark blue scales!
Both are a little more cash, but DEFINITELY worth every penny!!
Good luck and let us know what you decide on......with pics of course!!
Joe

PS.....if you're ONLY looking at the BD-1 and the Endura.......Endura hands down!

How about a Paramilitary 2? You can find them here on the exchange for around the $100 mark The S110V LW Manix is also very nice. Good luck. Kevin

agree. either get the manix 2 s110v or military s30v. The bd1 steel dulls much faster.

Between the two I'd go with the endura. Other choices around $100? Manix 2XL. Better handle size, shape and material and a longer blade. That's what I take on multi day backpacking trips. I'm not a liner lock fan but I'm sure the military would work well as far as size and capability.

I got my manix 2XL for $94 to my door. G10 S30V

Brian Regans Doc is right though Gotta lay off dairy to feel well. Check him out about 2 minutes 50 seconds in.

So I don't eat hardly any cheese these days. That one's kind of old. Sorry.

When we did a lot of back packing a block of cheese could save the day . . . what ever goop you make . . . if it doesn't taste good just throw more cheese on it. ;)

The other thing we took was home baked whole wheat bread that we baked in coffee cans. Has a lid to reseal and a guide for slicing . . . what's not to like ? Well there's that coating on the inside of the can . . . tastes funny ? . . . more cheese. :p

Any way . . . how you gonna slice blocks of cheese and bread with that little sucker ? ? ? ?

Go bigger I say

Sorry the photo came out so weird / blades foreshortened / the blades are not black but they look it here.

PM2. I use mine all the time in the kitchen and camp site. Great food prep knife.

My thoughts exactly

Hah y'all are going to make me spend more money... I'm more keen on the Manix 2 LW over the G10 versions due to the weight issue. I personally can't justify a 5/6 oz folder in my pack. The S110v Manix definitely caught my eye but is a bit out my price range, double the cost of an Endura, that being said I'm very tempted to just indulge and buy one.

In terms of ergonomics which design do you guys prefer between the Endura or the Manix?

Very much leaning torwards the S110v Manix at this point.

To me Manix 2 has much better ergo than Endura. In fact, I would go ahead say that Endura has the worst ergo among all the spydies that I have tries by far.

I'm inclined to agree. Enduras are great slicers, but the handle ergos are just off.

Have you considered a Stretch?

I did check out a Stretch early on but the design strikes me as very similar to an Endura (besides the ZDP-189 steel). For half the price I would prefer the Endura and it's VG-10 steel. Huge fan of VG-10 by the way.

Interesting, would you say the ergonomics of the Endura are similar to the Delica? I haven't handled a Manix at all so I can't make any relative comparison. But I don't mind the ergos on my Delica. Is it just a weird blade to handle ratio?

Spyderco K05PBK Kitchen Utility Knife 4.5" Plain Blade, Black Polypropylene Handle

Yup !

As soon as I read "In terms of ergo . . ." I was already thinking fixed blade.

Do you really want to be digging cheese out of that Manix handle. And out of the Spydie hole ? Yup. Yougonna be cause it is so short.

A lot of us EDC fixed blades in the city / at work. Fixed makes soooo much sense in the wild.

Really though once I am thinking fixed and food I am thinking Cold Steel Kray-ex handle.

Hmmm I'd have a hard time fitting it in my pocket haha

I EDC this Cold Steel far left but I bet the Spyderco Kitchen knife would fit in the Mora sheath that I use. There are larger Mora sheaths anyway. I buy the Mora, toss the knife and put the Cold Steel Kitchen 3inch in it's place. The Mora is great but I like the Cold Steel handle far better. For work, not food. For food go longer. As you can see there is plenty of room for length in that sheath. The Sheath with the Mora knife is like $18. Can't buy just a sheath for that. Not super durable at the belt but heck you could just put it in your pack with your food kit.

I carry this in my pocket and it works fine and I am not a large person so pockets accordingly. It spends some time on my belt but mostly just slipped in my pocket.

Here it is in my pocket; you can hardly see the top round end of the knife.
And talk about light ! ! ! ! the knife AND the sheath weigh nothing. I don't even know it is there. I can draw the knife without pulling the sheath out but it is best to pull the sheath out of my pocket to put it back in. Ha,ha,ha . . . unless you are feeling lucky . . . ha, ha.

PS: did I mention this is my ALL TIME favorite cutter. Seriously.
