Caly 3.5 and other knives ruined by local sharpener

Hello. I have not been on here for some time but whatever. Here I am. Today my brother in law and I went to have a few knives sharpened by a local guy who advertised knife sharpening. I had him sharpen my caly 3.5 and a butterfly knife and a brand new swithblade knife I bought today. Well the butterfly knife and the switchblade had to be trashed. They were really really bad. He also took a lot of metal off my caly 3.5 and it's not as bad as the other 2 he ruined but it's still really bad. Anyway, There is a lot of metal gone and the bevel is completely uneven and is absolutely hideous. I am really upset and I don't know what to do. Is there any fixing this kind of thing? I will attach a few photographs but it looks much worse in person.

Send it in to Spydero and they'll sort it. Will cost you a few dollars, but nothing much. Should come back almost as good as new..

I'd never trust a good knife to a local sharpener I knew nothing about. Better to get some equipment and do it yourself.

I don't know about "ruined". Looks fixable to me. What did the other two knives look like?

They were toast. The bevel grind on my switchblade was covering most of the blade and the tip was all mangled. It's in the garbage now. I tried to sand and polish it but it wasn't working so I threw it away. I actually tried to intentionally destroy it first but that thing was built tough. I had been looking for one for like ever and I had it only for a couple hours. The guy felt bad and wanted to outright give me a spyderco civilian for screwing up my knives but I said no. I know he's just trying to make a few bucks but he has absolutely no business offering sharpening services. It makes me sick to my stomach what he did to my caly and the fact that I had to trash my new italian switch blade.

You probably aren't familiar with edge geometry and proper bevel grinds.

Your pics do not show the issues too well either.

IMHO it it is worth it to learn to sharpen your own knives. Decide if you want to go free hand or a gizmo (Wicked Edge, Edge Pro, etc), get a cheap knife to learn on.

Yes, what's the problem? I have some passing familiarity with edge geometry and proper bevel grinds.

Hey Dano - as others have said, it doesn't look too bad. Maybe invest in a Sharpmaker? Really easy to use and get used to. Comes with an instructional CD and there are tons of videos on youtube. I don't know if you have seen many pictures of Singularity35's knives, but his edges always look AWESOME. Maybe ask him what system he uses (unless he freehands, which commands a whole new level of respect and admiration). Lastly, there are many service providers here on BF who can make your knives better than new. Very reasonable prices too. Good luck.

Thanks but I cheat with an edge pro. :D

I can freehand well enough to get knives working sharp but my freehand edges aren't pretty. I like freehand but unfortunately, freehand doesn't like me. :)

Chalk it up to experience, and do it yourself from here on out. Only you know how you want your stuff sharpened, so even a trained professional can "mess it up" if the result is fine but not what you ultimately wanted.

I'd say its definitely fixable without too much effort if you start with a coarse stone to remove the damage. With 'coarse' I do not mean the brown stone on the SM, more like a DMT coarse.
