Caly 3.5 and other knives ruined by local sharpener

Not getting sharp is not hitting the apex...

^ this. The problem is almost always the same. Edge bevel angle is more obtuse than your sharpening angle and you are hitting the shoulder instead of the apex. Best solution is to reprofile with coarse stones or send it to one I the members like Jason who offer that service.

I would have accepted the Civilian and then reprofiled the knives myself. Now sift thru those garbage bags and use these knives as a learning tool to learn how to sharpen yourself (even better then you are now).
Remember that 99% of this sharpening Guy's clientele are non knife person's who just want their cheap ass knives sharp (for a while) and don't even consider thinking about angle's and edges. So you learned a lesson. I wouldn't let any touch my knives let alone sharpen them unless i trusted their reputation. Now don't feel bad about it, a lesson learned and it wasn't a high $ custom knife that was "ruined". just send it back to Spyderco and they will resharpen your blade, or get out the sharpmaker and practice your sharpening.

#1 why would you throw an Italian made switch blade in the garbage over a bad sharpening? 99% of the time it can be re polished and reprofiled.
I recently screwed up a 410$ sebenza blade on paper wheels, wasnt ruined i just wasnt happy that i rounded the tip.
#2 dont be hostile to people who are trying to help you.
#3 the only part of the caly that is bad is by the heel of the blade. Reprofile it with a coarse stone or a dmt aligner or even your sharpmaker with a coarse triangle stone and it will be fine. It is not ruined. And since it wasnt sharpened on a belt sander its almost impossible that the heat treat was ruined. I suggest investing in the cost of one good knife for an edge pro or a dmt aligner kit at minimum. Still dont understand why youd throw out an italian switch blade, boggles me. Good luck.

I don't think the caly really looks bad. I can get most of mine shaving sharp, if the bevels don't look perfect it's irrelevant, mine are users. Sometimes I get rolled edges when I use them, from hitting bone or something else by accident. I don't throw them away when this happens.

What brand is the "switchblade"? It's not possible for all steels to reach the same level of sharpness. If you got the "switchblade" off eBay it might be a fake.

I only use my sharp maker to touch up the edge. If I need much more than that I go to the stones and do it freehand. Or in the case of my convex edged ones, the strop and compound.

If they aren't perfect it's ok, as long as they are sharp, I use them to cut and slice, not to look at. Besides, just because they are off a little doesn't mean they won't be better the next time. They get used a lot, they get sharpened a lot. They are always in a state of Flux anyway.

So the same guy who sharpened it said he would fix it and take his time and he did. It looks great now and is really sharp.

You sent it back the same guy? This is getting weird.

Why? He said he was in a hurry before and would take his time this time and he did. The edge looks great and it is screaming sharp. I can filet a piece of paper with it.

In your words he destroyed 2 out 3 knives you had him sharpen. Then you gave him another shot. Not good odds. Does this guy work on cars also. Would you have him work on your breaks?

lol cmon leave the guy alone please... it seems like dano came to a resolution, as oddly as it was resolved a resolution none the less... i feel like its fair to say anything beyond this point is just argumentative from both sides.

Based on the crispness of these photos, at least in comparison to the first set, I'd say the guy did a bang-up job?

You are right. Glad it worked out.

Maybe you should edit the thread title now?
Not so much ruined.
But, two knives pointlessly in the landfill.

I did salvage the balisong and I replaced the switchblade with a really nice italian one with wood handles. Really nice action and nice fit and finish. I'll attach a photo. I really like this one.

I'm glad it worked out but something does sound fishy here..
The first time I ever ruined a sharpening job on a knife I thought, ah crap might as well use it till it dulls then re set the bevel.

If I may ask, who's the maker on the switchblade?

I was laughing with my brother in law how I have 15+ Spydercos several of which are still new in box and I get so upset when someone puts a wonky bevel on my edc knife. haha

Which one? There's the one I threw out that I bought at the gun show that got ruined, the one I got at the head shop, and the wood handled one pictured above. In any case, I do not know the manufacturer. No-name I guess. I really do like that wood one though and the quality is excellent.

Yes the wood one it looks similar to one I had when I was a teenager that was a gift. Don't remember a name on it tho..
