Caly 3.5 and other knives ruined by local sharpener

You get your knife sharpened on a belt sander and then complain?

I hate to inform everyone but even spyderco factory edges are not perfect.

ANY KNIFE SHARPENED ON A BELT SANDER WILL HAVE ITS DEFECTS. I highly doubt sending it to Spyderco to have them again sharpen it on a belt sander to remove even more metal will solve anything. There is also no guarantee it will come back any better, consumers put way too much stock in factory edges.

Who said anything about a belt sander? The guy had the right equipment (not a belt sander) he just did a hasty job.

Too bad you trashed the other two, It would have made for good practice. I understand you being upset , take it as a sign that its time to look into learning more about putting your own edge on your knives.

Dude, can you tone the hostility down a bit? None of us here sharpened your knife after all. Besides, what's with the cryptic responses? What "proper equipment" did the guy use?

I'm actually very good at sharpening and have a sharpmaker and a couple quality stones. But It's nice to have a fresh bevel especially on the caly because it's such a shallow bevel.

If you can't set your own bevels....you're not very good at sharpening

Bite me loser
You asked for help when putting up this thread. If you don't know how to set bevels big deal. From my view the vast majority of us know how to maintain our knives but reprofiles are either beyond our knowledge or something we are afraid would end up not turning out right. I agree with being upset, also sounds like the gentleman was genuinely sorry with offering you a new blade. Just chalk this up as a learning experience and bin the future help support some of the members here. Many of them are highly regarded and I would have no problem sending them my hard earned knives. Hostility towards those trying to help is a bit immature. But I also agree some members were not so nice either.

He was hostile right from the first replies. He got attitude right back. OP posted pics, and got this reply.

I don't see it.

What is the problem?

Here's where he started losing it. This was his reply to the previous post. There was no one that was "not nice" to him before he started showing off.

You probably aren't familiar with edge geometry and proper bevel grinds.

Bite me loser

I'm not the one with wonky bevels and two knives that're "toast". How am I the loser? :D

Obviously, it was your attitude that got you bit in the a** in this thread. :)

Peace. Thanks to the last couple of posters for getting us back on track.
Advice is meant to enlighten, not to degrade. Take it as given in good faith.

We have Whine & Cheese for those who need to sneer at others.

Hard to tell from those pics but the caly doesn't look too bad at all. Easily fixable with the equipment you already have. So put those skills to work. Shouldn't take more than a half hour to sort that one out.

p.s. Be nice. :)

That Cali doesn't look bad in the photos and should be relatively easy to fix. I have seen factory grinds that were pretty bad and I've fixed them through reprofiling. A lot of factory grinds seem to have poor and inconsistent angles, since I buy most of my knives to use I end up having to fix them. I use a DMT Aligner with its diamond stones and it will reprofile a knife fairly easily. This system is not expensive, it is relatively foolproof, and doesn't take a long time.

Dano1978, It can be disappointing when you don't get the results you want from a knife sharpening service. I've learned that the hard way, too. However, I think the edge on your Caly is definitely fixable. I really wish you had taken pictures of the two that you felt were so bad you had to throw them out. I would have at least kept them for parts, or played with modifying the blade shapes and used them as beaters.

so basically the edge is decent but it is way more shallow towards the bottom of the blade. How would I fix that without grinding equipment? also, on my plain edge spydercos, I have no problems getting them shaving sharp but with my new switchblade, I cannot get a sharp edge on it at all. No matter what I do it's like a butter knife. why wont it sharpen?

Are you sharpening the edge until a burr is formed across the entire edge? I'd check there first, you might have found your problem.
