Caly 3.5 - just about the perfect EDC?

Hey folks,

I've had both the CF ZDP version and still own the VG10 version (I gave the CF ZDP version to a good friend).

My conclusion simply put is that even the basic VG10 version gets the most pocket time of any of my knives. Why? Because it is slim, light-weight, has the very discreet deep-carry wire pocket clip & cuts like a laser!

Whilst I'm not a massive fan of black G10, I would actually pick the VG10 over the ZDP for ease of sharpening, value and rust resistance (I live in a hot & humid environment and my pocket knife has to endure that as much as I do.)

Whilst I love my other Spydies and dare I say it, other brands too - this knife is just phenomenal.

Just had to share...

Thanks,

Ben

One can make a good argument that the Caly 3.5 is the "perfect" EDC. Mr. Sal used some of his magic sprinkle dust on this one and managed to make the blade seem longer than the scales in which it resides. The knife's thin profile, fine ergos and deep clip ad to its goodness. Plus, it was credited with saving the life of a 6 year old from a cougar attack:

"I credit my EDC caly 3.5 with saving my 6 year old son's life last night. A mountain lion attacked outside of the restaurant at the Chisos Mountain Lodge in Big Bend National Park. It attacked quickly and ferociously from the brush near the sidewalk, and pulled him away from my wife, into the brush near the sidewalk. I turn[ed] and ran to my son, finding the lion clamped on his face. It didn't respond to bare fist pounding, so I went for my knife and stabbed the lion in the chest. The blade went in easily and fully, and the lion came off my son and ran off into the woods. That all-day carry of the knife and practice drawing and snapping open that annoyed my wife so much paid off - drawing the knife and stabbing the cat seemed second nature...As of now, the lion has not been found. Judging by the amount of blood on the blade, and the angle of entry, I believe it may have crawled off somewhere to die." Link.

I agree! This knife rocks!

I too love the blade to handle ratio.
Great story Powernoodle! That is something else!

Hey guys!

Thanks for your input/ feedback.

PowerNoodle - I did see that story when it came out. Speaks to the advantage of a knife that you will comfortably carry with you literally everywhere.

Keeo your thoughts coming!

Ben

I've tried many Spyderco models and the Caly 3.5 always gets my vote. IMHO, it is the perfect blend of aesthetic and function.

Before I lost mine I carried it constantly. I agree. You all may have convinced me to purchase another.

I especially like my Super blue Caly 3.5 it has to be the sharpest knife of all my collection.

+1. Mine get very sharp too. Very easy to EDC. But not as much fun to flip one handed because of the back lock. Still one handed closing is possible and easy. Just not liner lock or frame lock easy.

I prefer the full size Calypso - but I do agree that, while I don't own one, the 3.5 looks to be a damn fine knife.

I know what your saying about a lock back, not as much fun for flipping. I have a few Kershaws with liner locks , those I use for flipping :p
Most days I find a fella really doesn't need a super fast flipper anyway, so when I really need a sure footed knife, I'll use my Caly or Stretch.

Not sure re. The comments about vertical blade-play for lock backs. Maybe I've just been exceptionally lucky but neither of my Enduras, nor my Salt, nor my Caly, nor my Caly 3.5, nor my Fallkniven TK3 have any vertical blade-play what so ever...

Obviously YMMV...

I think it may be that they consider lock rock to be play whereas you (and I) don't.

What is "lock rock" cause I have zero play in my back-lock spyderco's either.

It's when if you press the edge down onto something forcefully (im pretty sure it's called positive pressure) the lock will sink deeper into the face and the blade will "rock" back a bit. It doesn't hurt anything.

I just got a Caly 3.5 CF/zdp189 and It sure does seem perfect for EDC. My go to Spyderco before this Caly 3.5 was either Endura in zdp or FFG Manix. The Caly 3.5 just adds the nice carbon fiber and polished blade for a fancier look (even though it's a finger print magnet).

Very good EDC for sure. There will be a debate on which knife is truly the best EDC but the Caly 3.5 is certainly among the top tier of the discussion.
