Caly 3.5 - just about the perfect EDC?

IMHO both Calys 3 and 3.5 are among the best production knives for EDC.

The beauty of the Caly 3.5 is its narrow and thin profile. It feels smaller. My preference is the CF/ZDP-189. Due to 3" blade length limit here I use the next best thing, that is, Caly 3 CF/ZDP-189.

One can make a good argument that the Caly 3.5 is the "perfect" EDC. Mr. Sal used some of his magic sprinkle dust on this one and managed to make the blade seem longer than the scales in which it resides. The knife's thin profile, fine ergos and deep clip ad to its goodness. Plus, it was credited with saving the life of a 6 year old from a cougar attack:

"I credit my EDC caly 3.5 with saving my 6 year old son's life last night. A mountain lion attacked outside of the restaurant at the Chisos Mountain Lodge in Big Bend National Park. It attacked quickly and ferociously from the brush near the sidewalk, and pulled him away from my wife, into the brush near the sidewalk. I turn[ed] and ran to my son, finding the lion clamped on his face. It didn't respond to bare fist pounding, so I went for my knife and stabbed the lion in the chest. The blade went in easily and fully, and the lion came off my son and ran off into the woods. That all-day carry of the knife and practice drawing and snapping open that annoyed my wife so much paid off - drawing the knife and stabbing the cat seemed second nature...As of now, the lion has not been found. Judging by the amount of blood on the blade, and the angle of entry, I believe it may have crawled off somewhere to die." Link.

Power, that's a terrible thing to see happen to your child, hope he's ok and heals quickly.

Just an FYI wwells20,

This was first reported back in Feb of 2012 and I don't think PowerNoodle was the protagonist...

I've been very happy with my zdp-189 caly 3, I've even been meaning to get a spare in case it gets lost. Now I'm wondering if I should get a caly 3.5 instead? Any thoughts folks? Caly 3 vs caly 3.5?

Firstly, apologies PowerNoodle, I submitted my response before I saw yours (ooops!).

Sideways, I never has the Caly 3 but I had a Sage 1 and the UKPK in G10, S30V. I believe my UKPK is exactly the same profile and size as the Caly 3 & whilst it and my Sage were/are great folders the extra 0.5 inch means that despite the coil you actually end up with about 3 inches of cutting edge. That make a fair amount of difference.

What can I say except; 3.5, 3.5, 3.5!

All just my opinion - YMMV but if you already have the 3 I'd recommend the variety...

;)

If I had to choose between any 3 or 3.5 against the Caly 3 Super Blue (unlaminated!), hands down that Caly 3 Super Blue would be in my pocket.

The Caly 3.5 is a very good EDC. I prefer the ZDP-189 version over the VG-10 version, as it can take and hold a more acute edge.

Between the Caly 3 and the 3.5 I think that the 3.5 wins hands down. I do still keep my CF/ZDP Caly 3 because it has a smaller, more people friendly blade, and because my Dad bought it for me.

Here's a few pics of my 3.5 that I've taken down to 20 degrees inclusive:

Ok, thanks I'll need to pick up a caly 3.5 when the time is right. That edge on cynics 3.5 looks insane. :)

Good stuff! Whats the red reflection in the blade? Looks like a sunset at the beach. :D

Ok…reading the forum I’ve been convinced that a Caly should be my next knife. Was leaning toward the 3.5 until I saw a Caly 3 Super Blue at a super price; ordered it. Now I’m convinced I should get the 3.5 also, but which one?? VG10 or ZPD-189? Pros: VG10 leaves a little cash for another down the road purchase. Cons: I may have buyers remorse because I do love “sharp” and the couple zdp-189’s I have are deathly sharp.
Someone…push me off the fence!

VG10 gets just as sharp. ZDP just stays that sharp longer.

For hard use get the VG10/G10. The CF/ZDP looks much classier, is a bit lighter and I prefer it to the normal one for my use since I normally carry a Para2/Southard/Techno/PPT at work and wanted something a bit different.
