Caly 3.5?

Caly 3.5 is my next Spydie but still torn on what blade. I have read more than once the ZDP scratches easier and it's harder to sharpen as apposed to the VG-10. There is a fair price spread so this week leaning towards the VG-10. Lol
Nice scoop JSMcustoms!

There are advantages and disadvantages to both. The G10 is grippier than the CF on the ZDP-189 version. As you note, the 420J2 cladding is easy to scratch. The ZDP-189 blade will keep an edge longer, though it won't be as tough as the VG-10 (which is kind of a moot point in a slicing knife like this) and the VG-10 will be easier to touch up, but will require it more frequently.

I don't think that there is a wrong choice--well, other than not getting one in the first place :)

Here's a post from another thread on the Caly 3.5:

The Caly 3.5 is a very good EDC. I prefer the ZDP-189 version over the VG-10 version, as it can take and hold a more acute edge.

Between the Caly 3 and the 3.5 I think that the 3.5 wins hands down. I do still keep my CF/ZDP Caly 3 because it has a smaller, more people friendly blade, and because my Dad bought it for me.

Here's a few pics of my 3.5 that I've taken down to 20 degrees inclusive:

The Caly 3 and 3.5 in VG10, ZDP, and Super Blue are amazing cutting, slicing machines. All good, I like the Super Blue though it's just personal. The two other flavors are just as competent. It's just a matter of taste. All high performance economy lightweight , non maintenance intensive sports models. I like each and every one, and have at least one of each version. Like Spyderco lockbacks built in Japan keep the bearing surface free of grit and it will polish up mirror smooth over time. If you lube it try something that won't trap grit.

Don't pry, don't baton. It's a purpose built high performing matter separator.
