Hello from the Blade Show!

Lots if interesting sharp objects in the Spyderco case. One that's scheduled for production in the forseeable future and not just a "concept knife," is the lightweight version of the Calypso Jr.

The digital photo here doesn't really do it justice, and the blade surface reflects a bit of oil. The prototype shown is AUS8a, but the production version should be [440V...OOPS!] VG10. The clip is reversable with threaded steel inserts on both sides of the handle. Note the new fish-scale texture on the handle. The difference between front and rear is a shadow effect.

Hmmm, a lightweight with 440 steel ? That is a must have (along with about 50 others).
Thanks, for the pics, James.

Wow! That is gonna be a real winner in the "cutting power for the $" department. 440V and fully flat ground! But what is up with that handle texture? Fish scales??? Yucko!

James:
Thanks for sharing the picture and hope you all at the Blade Show are enjoying it! I guess Spydie's going all the way this time...lightweight, 440V blade! Fish-scale handle, huh? Interesting...
Another must-have!

James, you are quite the reporter, thanks.

This is a must have for me, the fish scales
look fine to me. Don't want every knive looking the same!

Ok, and lots of hard work...

James - Great photo, as usual, thanx. Must make a correction though. Steel is to be VG-10, not 440V as reported. (Light weight Native to go 440V at tyear end or early next year. Thanx again James.

It is also one of our only tip down lightweights (other than the Cricket). Sorry for those that prefer tip up, but the "tip down" carry folks have been waiting some time for a tip down light wieght with left / right capabilities

Sal. I thought one of the reasons for tip-up on the lightweights was there wasn't enough mass to use the pinch grip opening that a heavier tip-down model favors.

Will the pivot mechanism change on the lightweight Calypso to facilitate this type of opening? Or can we expect the Endura/Delica/etc. mechanism?

Joel

I don't see how I can complain about VG10 lightweight and 440 Native. Sal, you guys are just beyond belief. I can remember when production knives catered to the lowest common denominator. Along comes a Spyder...
THANKS
Brian

Does anybody know the characteristics of VG-10? I feel dumb.
On second look, the new handle pattern looks more like a waffle pattern. I want it, and soon!

Spyderco's knives are evolving at a scary speed!

I just saw one, held it in my hand. Very nice. I was wondering about the "scaley" appearance too, but I like it. Makes the handle smooooth.
I WILL own one of these.
For technical descriptions, you can look at the VG-10 alloy proportions and their properties at: http://www.spyderco.com/spyderco_products.html

These are very nice knives. The handle has a optical illusion effect almost. Very nice texture and very nonslip feeling. I saw one that was maroon zytel that was fantastic. Very nice color Sal. The lock bar is recessed similar to the Boye Prophet. They've definitely done the homework for this one. I can't wait. VG10 too!

Joel - That was one of the reasons for the tip up carry. This model can be "drop snapped" open, but it takes a more assertive snap. However, there are many that like tip down and don't "drop snap". They've just becomed accustomed to the different rotation required to position. We cannot please everyone all of the time, but we can try to please many!?

Hey Chinook: Ain't nothin' wrong with scales, Mr. Salmon.

If Paul D. saw one with a maroon handle, can we hope that some color other than black might hit the market? I'd love to see one with a maroon or burgundy handle, especially if it is in a price range comparable to other knives in the lightweight lines.

I can think of several people who might get one as a present.
