I completed this last night. It's for myself to help clear brush, but it's a good camp ax size. It's forged from heavy duty pickup axle, cleaned up by grinding, and heat treated. The handle is kind of hastily done, shaped down from a cruiser ax handle.

I'm still going to play some with the grind of the bevel.

I think it has darn sexy lines. Must be the sideburns on it. :) Had two folks already order one for themselves just from seeing it in my shop. Gotta get busy!

Very nicely done....Really like the shape also....Looks like it will do the job for you !

Hi Storm Crow, great work. Can you tell us more, size of the head, the bit length, the weight, poll size etc. Did you forge it by hand or use a power hammer.

Best regards

Robin

Thanks, guys!

Robin - The eye was punched with my homebrewed hydraulic press and the rest was forged on my homebrewed power hammer. I'll try to get more dimensions.

I like the lines. It looks like it will do what you ask of it. Look forward to the details Pipeman asked about.

I was not able to get a scale to measure it today, but the other dimensions are:

From end of the poll to the cutting edge is 6 9/16". From top of poll to bottom of poll is approximately 1 3/8" at the eye, and 1 1/4" at the face of the poll. Width of the poll is 3/4". Distance from top of ax to bottom of sideburns is 1 1/2". Distance from top of ax to bottom of beard is 3 3/8". All corners are bevelled slightly and the face of the poll is gently crowned.

It's quite light. I got the grind adjusted on the bevel, and it cuts pretty darn well now. :)

Visitor - I've had enough inquiries about my garden hoe and my camp ax that they're now part of my official lineup: http://helmforge.blogspot.com/2011/05/garden-hoes-and-camp-axes-offered-for.html

that is a clean machine, I like it a lot.

What kind of steel is old heavy duty truck axle? that may be a good source of steel for making stuff from.

that is a clean mackine, I like it a lot.

What type of steel do they make old heavy duty truck axles from? that would be a possible cheaper source of some tough iron.

cut the handle, at least half...its axe with a tomahawk handle. Except that...great job.

Show us weddings...

I'm in lust!
that is one sweet looking light axe -- something like that could displace my beloved Hudson Bay.
