I want to get my son a camp/hunting/skinning knife. 4-5 inch fixed blade with sheath. I would like to keep the price under $60 if I can.

Hello!

May I ask how old your son is? Is this going to be his first time handling a knife?

If it's a starter knife your're looking for and from the the blade description you posted plus price point, why not try the inexpensive Mora knives. Cheap? Yes. Simple and functional? Definitely! The signature model is the simple, red barrel-shaped handle.

The 2000 and Clipper models are well-known to outdoors people.

If he's older or more experienced, more substantial knives would be the Blackjack Grunt or the Cold Steel Bushman (though the bushman is a tad longer than 4-5 inches) .

Get him a mora and a SAK farmer. Great outdoor combo.
Probably more campers, hikers, and backpackers use a Swiss Army Knife than any other single product. But I think it's not a good choice for cleaning game - all of the blood and 'gunk' caught inside all of the moving parts and small gaps, and they can't be taken apart for cleaning.

Mora would be a fantastic choice, of course. There are even 'youth' models with guards available, but since your son is 16 that may not be a concern.

Buck has several nice and affordable hunting knives. The 119 has been mentioned, but the similar Woodsman and Pathfinder might be better suited for small game, and more comfortable to carry/use for a younger person.

Check out the series of hunting knives from AG Russell that have the locking sheaths (Hunters Scalpel, Bird and Trout, and Deer Hunter). Better steels, locking sheaths, and molded handles.

For something a little nicer (ie, not plastic) Queen makes some nice drop point hunters in D2 steel and oak handles. $44 at Cumberland Knife Works.

I wholeheartedly agree with this post!

The Mora can be used for countless outdoor chores, including skinning game if you don't want to "gunk" up the Farmer. The Farmer, along with the Pioneer Harvester, are the two best SAK designs out there in my opinion. This combination would be cost effective, wouldn't cause a heart attack if you (or your son) lost them, and will serve with efficiency and solidity.

I only use a fixed blade a couple times a year, so I didn't want to spend a lot of money on it. Moras are well respected by almost everyone here so that is a good choice. They don't appeal to me personally so I went with a Cold Steel Finn Bear. Honestly, I haven't used it enough to find out if it's junk or not, but at $11, I don't really care.

Ka-Bar, Spec Plus, and Cold Steel all make great knives for that price point. And they've been decent knives for forever. I mean there are far better blades... but for just a cheap user that is made of decent quality materials... those companies stand out in my mind.

I'm probably going to get flamed to hell for this, but if I was 16 and dad gave me a mora, I'd be a little let down.

I understand that it's a good knife. I understand that price doesn't equal value. But dad buying son a knife is sort of a special moment. I would feel a little let down if he handed me a $6 mora.

I'd be looking to spend a little more, and go with:
Production - Fallkniven, Rat, Bark River, etc..
Custom - JK, Fiddleback, Koyote, you name it...

Just my $.02

I am inclined to agree with Noshtero. I believe that a knife that is usable, good looking and reasonable in price, can be found in a Buck Vanguard. Just a thought.

I agree completely. A first hunting knife, especially a gift from Dad is a very "special" knife. Spend a little extra, and get him something like a Bob Dozier "General Camp and Hunting: for around $200. www.dozierknives.com

He'll treasure it for life!

Get him a Buck Nighthawk - he'll think it's cool (I do and I'm 40). I'd match it w/ a multi-tool for camping/hiking.

I say Get the BUCK. It Was my First Fixed Blade Knife given to me for hunting and camping when I was 8 years old.

Or If you want to go the more Modern Rout I would Suggest getting the Benchmade Fixed Griptilian. Or for Possibly cheaper, But just as good get any Of the Benchmade NRA series like this one-http://www.knifetrek.com/product_info.php?products_id=2518

The Benchmde Drop Point Hunter is also Very Nice camp/Skinner knife. With Nice leather sheath and Wood handle if you like the traditional. Wood And Leather.(I like) not Plastic and Nylon. also It might help to teach Son to take care of knife. They Are cheaper then this most of time, Just found quick link to the knife that fit your need-http://twincitytactical.com/product_info.php?products_id=714

Good Luck, and have fun. How I Miss the days of Hunting and fishing with my Father and Grandfather. Some of the best days in life:)
