Camp knife for my son.

Get him a Buck Nighthawk - he'll think it's cool (I do and I'm 40). I'd match it w/ a multi-tool for camping/hiking.

HAhA, Me TOO!!!!!

Don't think make too good Skinning knife though.

Cool too is the Benchmade Snoody NRA Knife. Very sharp. I Skinned Pleanty of animal with. Easy to sharpen too.

And Cheap, Also Snoody design Looks "Cool" to a Youngster. It Look "Military" kind of cool, but still very useful and Purpose Driven design

I think getting a reasonalblly priced knife like the Buck or the Marbles for a 16 year old is really reasonable. That way he will be able to use it without constant fear of loosing an expensive knife.
High School graduation will be along soon enough and that is when I bought my son his first Bark River.
Just my $.02

+1 on a Dozier.

If you don't want or can't spend that much now, Boker recently came out with a Dozier design fixed blade that caught my eye. "Boker Plus Dozier Anchorage Pro Skinner"

It's a little shorter than what you wanted, but 3.5" blade isn't bad. AUS-8 is a fine steel and the leather sheath that comes with it looks nice. I would get one myself except I have my mind set on an actual Dozier so I've been saving up whatever extra cash I have for one.

The Boker Dozier is only around $50. Made in China though. So if you aren't one to care about country of origin then I think it would be a nice knife to get.

I'm probably going to get flamed to hell for this, but if I was 16 and dad gave me a mora, I'd be a little let down.

I understand that it's a good knife. I understand that price doesn't equal value. But dad buying son a knife is sort of a special moment. I would feel a little let down if he handed me a $6 mora.

I'd be looking to spend a little more, and go with:
Production - Fallkniven, Rat, Bark River, etc..
Custom - JK, Fiddleback, Koyote, you name it...

Just my $.02

I'm 16. I agree with this post, get him something he will love to use. Used RAT comes to mind.

Ya I just wanted to throw out in addition to my last post. It doesn't need to be an heriloom quality custom or anything. Just not a mora

Benchmade, Buck, Lots of others make decent knives for under $100.

If it were me I may take it to the next level and go Fallkniven, Rat, Bark River though.

Or a custom. I like JK (Stomper on the boards) quite a bit.

Get him one of these.

He'll love it, and own it forever.

I would suggest a Buck 102 woodsman. It was my first fixed blade, has dressed 20+ deer and too many small game animals to count. I have used the knife to whittle fuzz sticks, dress trout, cut fish line and rope, whittle camp tools, and make a PBJ sandwich over the last 20 years and the knife is still going strong.

I would also recommend Marble's knives, but rumor has it the metal is made in china, and we don't need to send any more work over sea's. Buy American if you can!

I'd go with either a Buck 119, or a Mora and a SAK. Of course, you could always add a little bit more and get him a RAT RC 3 or RC 4 if you like. Great blades, best warranty in the biz, and it is a RAT.

Oh, He's 16!! I thought we where talking about a little Boy.

Get Him Something "Cool" Yet still functional. RAT Is Perfect and Great Price. Nice Kydex.

Or Dozier is Perfect, and he will treasure it, but it a 4+ month wait for any Dozier except the ones on www.bladeart.com and AG Russel.

But Rat cutlery for around 100 is perfect. anyone would love to be handed one of those, especially a 16 year old. All the different carry options, and Nice carbon steel. Sharpens east, super tough too. all around camping/hunting outdoors knife.

A lot of people have suggested the buck 119. I do not own a 119 but have handled a few. I do however, own a buck nighthawk and like it a lot and think that most 16 year olds would prefer the look of the nighthawk over the more classic look and feel of the 119.

Another vote for the Buck 102 Woodsman. I great knife that will last a life time.

.....under $60....I like the Beretta Loveless Drop Point Hunter with zytel handle. Made by Moki, the quality is outstanding. About $45 shipped off of eBay.

For about $80 shipped you could get him a nice premium model Buck Vanguard with a laminated rosewood handle, polished brass pommel & guard, and a drop point blade made of high-end CPM154 steel with titanium coating; it comes with a nice leather sheath. Made in the USA. Exceptional value in a time-tested design. It will last forever.
