Just wonder how other parts of NA are for camp robbers. My daughter and I went camping and hunting last weekend. We set up the tent Friday night, had a nice camp fire and went to bed. After a good night's sleep we went hunting the next day.
We saw a pocupine:

Some wolf tracks:

And she bagged her first grouse with her little 22:

That night as we were approching our camp site we met another truck (with three ~16-20 yr olds) about 30m prior to the camp site which was on a through road, I pulled over and let them by. As I pulled into the camp site I noticed the tent was looking pretty limp. I got out of the truck and could hear the other truck speeding away. Closer examination showwed all the tent pegs had been pulled and were dropped in a pile. I say we got back at just the right time or else our tent (thermarests & sleeping bags) would have been gone! The only other thing we left at the site was a Fiscars splitting axe which got stolen.

It was great weekend, I'm just glad the rest of our gear didn't get stolen. Maybe we are just lucky here as usually the camp sites are safe:confused:

Never had a problem with it myself, but as far as my gear goes, usually I'm either sleeping in it or it's on my back.

Here I thought this thread would be about Stellar's Blue Jays, often referred to as "Camp Robbers".

Sorry to hear about that. I haven't had that problem, but I also don't leave anything valuable in camp.

I try to camp away from others. I go far, and go off trail – from trails that weren't popular to begin with. When car camping, I go on difficult, unmarked 4 wheel drive only roads, far from the nearest towns. I go off-season, and in the middle of the work week. I go when it's too hot, or too cold, or too wet, or too windy, or too mosquito ridden, etc., for anyone else to want to camp there at that time. I also usually completely break camp and take my stuff with me, each day.

By doing this, I haven't had problems with thieves – yet. I hope I never do – for their sake, as much as for my own.

Man, musta been a big wolf, that paw print is 5"-6" from claw to pad, puts it at around 110-115lbs. Damn, big woofer.

Awesome on the grouse, she looks happy!!! Can't wait until my girls are getting out for some huntin' with the Ol' Man.

Brother, I was just robbed of $300 in cash on Monday. Thieves are the worst kind. I hate they got ur axe, but I'm glad they didn't get much else. Sounds like teens out being teens, but, their parents should have raised them better. Good post, thanks for sharing.

Here's a Steller's jay, for Rotte:

That is the scrawniest Stellar's I have ever seen.

next weekend bring a bud and do the same thing but hide in your tent with peperspray and a taser!

I had my entire tent stolen once while camping in Big Bear in So cal. Went 4x4ing came back and the entire tent and contents were gone! And the kicker was I had borrowed it all from the Marine Corps Welfare and Recreation (MWR) on base. So then I had to pay for it anyway.

Glad you had a good time camping but a bummer you almost had all your stuff ripped off. I've never had anything stolen by two legged thieves. Seems like one of those unwritten rules...you never mess with another guys car, woman (unless she's tremendously hot), or camping gear.

Man I thought maybe some Racoons stole some food. I never had any issues while camping. I am sorry to hear of your experience.

Congrats to your daughter on her Grouse. I hope the little thieving bastids didn't spoil your trip.

Well, like i say when i camp with my loved ones I'm on a higher guard. Criminals see me as a target, meaning I got my lady or my parents etc with me. But when I'm by myself it's different. So I hope you had protection if they wanted more!

His daughter had protection even!

Glad you got to enjoy some quality time with your girl. Sorry that some jackasses put a little spoilage into it though.

Punks are everywhere.

Congratulations to your daughter on her first grouse. THAT should be the memory of this trip. :)

Never had any problems with it myself, but I have had a few friends get stuff stolen. It really sucks. Glad you had a good time other than that though.

That is the highlight of the trip! And now she says she likes hunting better than fishing:D

I have had a couple things nabbed while sleeping (chair & soft gun case) and a friend of mine had his car burgled up in the parking area of a campsite.

I have decided to never camp in that general area any more.

its a shame there are so many people just willing to take what you worked so hard for. in this case glad it was something so minimal. that wolf track is huge he was definitely a big boy lol.

as far as it goes that smile on your daughters face made losing that axe well worth it. she looks like you might just have made a hunting partner for life.

I've never had a problem when camping in the woods but did have some fishing equipment stolen a few years ago while staying in a campground. Congrats to both of you for the grouse.
