Camp Robbers

We had a canoe stolen. Bad thing was we were on the other side of the river from civilization. 50 thousand acres of ..well nothing but pine trees and brush. We had to swim the river in the middle of Feb. It was in Miss. but it was still way way cold. luckily we walked 2 miles and found a house. Lady made a call for us and gave us some towels and hot chocolate.

I'm rarely in a situation where I leave a campspot without all my gear.

In the past when it's happened, there's either a buddy staying in camp, or I break everything down and hide it somewhere good.

Here in the Sierra Nevadas, it seems like any thefts happen within one day's walk from the trailhead. Thieves need their vehicles. Trailheads are the most likely places for trouble.

More than one day in and your stuff is safe from humans with bad character. IME.

Where I come from there is a name for people that do that, but I don't want to say it in case the moderators get angry at me for bad language. The one good thing about being out camping though is that if you did catch these low-life scum trying to take your stuff, it wouldn't be all that hard to find somewhere to bury the bodies - good use of the camp shovel too.
