Camping in Primeval Forest of Fuji

First of all, I thank all of you for having interest in this thread and my field.

FCould you please give us more details about it? Is it home made? Is the cardboard just there as a wind break or is part of the system?

Also, if it's not a secret, where is the forest and caves at?

Looks like many hungry guys living in this place :D
That smoke machine is made by a buddy of mine who owns Opinel shown in a pic.
It's based on a delivery box made of aluminum, which is usually deployed by
local Japanese food restaurants.
Modified to hold several steel net floor to put smoked food on, and put a stainless pad
to heat smoking wood chip which is placed at the bottom of this metal box.
As you can see it has a handle on top of the box naturally because it is a delivery box :D

Sorry, I'll comment on the lava cave later. I must go to the office now. :(

Fujita-san,

It looks like a great place to hike and camp. You should come up to Hokkaido sometime. I think you`d like it.

I think Honshu is very hot and humid now. Hang in there!

is there much obsidian around?
Doc

Thanks, Doc.
I've never seen one around Mt. Fuji although it is volcano.
Looks like there's no obsidian around this mountain, the lava type maybe wrong to form that kind of stone.

Obsidian tools excavated around Mt. Fuji are studied and known to be carried for hundred miles from Nagano Prefecture so far.

The cardboard around smoke box is for windshield to keep temperature and fire.
It was an improvisation of me and not an original part of this smoke system.

The cave is quite well-known and you can see it on the map.
Not sure this type of URI string is properly shown on this board but I'll try.

Not so dangerous place but better go with someone who has experience in caving activity.
Although some of them has a shaft as deep as hundred feet that to visit such cave,
static rope descending/climbing equipment and technique is required.

Beautiful pics. I never tire of looking at your knife---love it! You should sell them...

Now about the smoker what else was in there beside the bacon??? I can see a small stove at the bottom. What did you use for the smoke??? For some reason i got craving for smoked trout.

Thanks, sasha.
There we had a whole chicken, salmon, eggs, cheese.
Chipped cherry was mainly used to smoke.
There's a gasoline stove (MSR) placed beneath the smoke box.

Why does that cave stay so cold?

To be honest I have no answer to this question that this is one of the
most amazing point whenever I visit these caves.
Not all of them are so cold and the one we visited this time is the coldest.
I have some suppositions but have no definite answer.
The amount of ice within this cave varies as time goes on.
It had much more ice when I visited this cave some fifteen years ago.
Someone says decline of ice means earth temperature rising which will eventually
result in volcanic explosion of Mt. Fuji .... Hahaha. I'm not sure.

Thanks, Rockywolf.
I like my knife but as I'm not sure what people thinks about it that I'm so happy to hear your words.
As the steel is M2 and hardened to Rc. 64+ (HV 819), most people living here may not like this steel configuration.
Not so hard to sharpen compared to popular stainless steels but definitely harder than plain carbon steel (to sharpen), may pose some trouble in case of chipping.
But I love this steel as it keeps excellent edge very well.

I have a plan for next knife that someday I can do giveaway.

Great shots ...and I thought Japan was just sky scrapers. But then, what would you expect from an African :D

Thanx for sharing. Those greens, we never see on the African savannah.

Thanks, and your right, David.
It's raining every day these days, so lucky that it didn't rain last weekend.
I've visited Hokkaido several times in winter, mainly for ski and ice climbing.
A great place as you said.

mtnfolk mike, thanks for your kind words.
Smoking in the woods has a certain good thing to be added to the bacon itself.
That is, mosquitoes don't like the smoke :)

Beautiful photos Fujita!! The scenery there is stunning, those lava caves look very much interesting, and that smoked made my mouth start watering again and i just ate a bit ago. I must have been out of town when you posted this, I am sorry it took so long to see it. Great Post! I like that knife of yours, looks like a good size to be useful but not get in the way....and be tucked out of the way when you want it to be. I like the thoughts in that.

Thanks mistwalker for your kind words.
As this is my favorite field, I'm so happy to see you like this place.

I can easily see why it is your favorite. After reading this I went outside for a while...and I noticed we still have a few fireflies flittering around here.
