Camping, knives, fire making

yeah, I stay away from Anzo after the spring... not as many trees and material to chop as in Idlewild :D

get plenty of material around Julian and of course the pies are my weakness

Spent a few days in Idyllwild Ca, just car camping. Was a great time and this is a gorgeous place

and a new extreme fire starter,

DSC02782.jpg

it consists of 4 REI storm matches, a small piece of fatwood, lamp wick and it's all wrapped in just that is soaked in wax

more to come!

These look very familiar :D yours look a lot more refined than mine did though bro, I kinda gave up on putting any more thought into them after discovering the Zip lighters that I now use. The Zip product only costs me a few bucks for 12 and they burn for 8 mins as well so making my own hardly seemed worth the effort !

what is this Zip lighter you speak of? Sorry I forgot to credit you with this idea, I couldn't remember who I got it from on here, shouldve known it was you though, you're always coming up with awesom fire ideas

Hi, i have the same knife & sheath set up, where might i get a river 8 pouch like that? ,help would be much appreciated, thanks,G.M

Awesome fire ideas ? My wife says I'm a pyro-maniac !!!!

I can't find a link to the Zip brand ones but they are the same as the strikable ones on this link !

I know Cabela's sells an identical product over here. I used one to start a fire while field dressing a deer at dusk on a cold Montana mountain in Nov.

Looks like a good trip and plenty of fire and steel to keep a grown boy happy.

For 30 years I have used stuff called "Zip", Pitdog, but I wasn't sure it was the same stuff I was referring to when I saw you post about it. The stuff I use looks like really dense styrofoam that smells like diesel, and is supposed to be used to light charcoal BBQs, right? Looking at the pics in the link, it is most like the white stuff on the far left and far right of the pic. It isn't self-lighting as far as I can see, but goes up with a small flame or, as I prefer, ignited steel wool (9v battery lights the wool). Same stuff as the Zip or no?

awesome pics man! love that area, you should be lucky to be so close, Im envious.:D
Cant wait to see pics next time ya go, seriously lovely area.

I saw something similar to the thing pitdog posted a link to. The one I saw looks like one of those pencil sized (wax and shavings) tendersticks you can get from wal mart but they had a match embedded in the end of them. So you strike it like a match then let it catch and it's supposed to burn for 5-10 minutes.

Here's a link, now that I look I think it's the thing pitdog was talking about.

They seem cheap enough to be worth trying and looks like the thing you (Grunt...) made to start your fire with.

I also have a question for you (Grunt...) how does the Ka-Bar cutlass compare to the Ka-Bar camp knife? I have the camp knife and it looks almost identical to the pictures of your cutlass...I'm guessing there must be some size difference though.

Echo4V,

Those are identical to what I got from Cabela's and they worked well. Burned plenty long enough to ignite a load of pine needles and small twigs.

DWK2,

I saw them in the majorssurplus catalog as one of the items they give away if you buy something on that page and thought it would be cool to try but I have never used those firestarters before( without the match made into it) so I wasn't sure how well it would work.

Three boxes of 20 for 8 bucks seems like a great deal since you said they work well.

Thanks
David

These are similar to those I use but IMO the Zip brand ones are better, they are larger and the whole end is coated like a match, they burn really hot and last at least 8 mins !

With the Coghlan's, don't hold your fingers too close to the match-coated end when you strike them. They flare up pretty significantly when they ignite. I choked up on the thing when I struck it and had to back off quickly.

Grunt,

Nice pics - but we could use more of the babe! ;)

Now it is time to start fire with a friction method!

Also, IS there such a thing as 'too much' kindling? I think you prepared 5 times the amount you thought - which is JUST RIGHT!

TF

Great pics and great job on that fire bundle you made!

I really like the looks of the Browning.

well the offer stands if you change you mind

Nice pics - but we could use more of the babe!
it"s funny you say that, I actually have a picture of her warming her backside by the fire! Not gonna post it here though;)

I'm not sure I'm ready to try friction fire yet, soon though.

thanks for all the comments guys!

If you look on firepits.com you can find a similar firepit for your yard, I have one and it's great!
