camping SAK

The Victorinox Ranger is also good choice for a trip to the woods.

my hands down absolute favorite-my one and only on climbing trips around the world and many peaks in colorado and for camping-for over thirty five years!

since i wear glasses i always add the mini screw driver to the corkscrew

while i have the OH fireman, the outrider, and other larger saks -ive always found that this size is great-i have little need for large blades

the ony thing it doesnt have is pliers-which gerneally have little use for me camping, except for one of my pots which has no bail or handle (they can come in handy to extract hot things)

however i have never missed it and choose not to carry a swiss champ due to the size and weight

the Ranger has everything i need -openers, file, saw, scissors, two blades,

to me it is the most for a pocket fit-pretty light and always with me

For pocket friendly I like the farmer or the camper and that strictly depends upon whether you think you need the tweezers and toothpick or not. Personally, the tweezers have taken too many splinters out of my hands in the field to not have handy that would required some cutting without them.

In addition, before my dog went on to his great reward last summer :( I was always careful to make sure I had a SAK with tweezers in my pocket when we hit the woods together. Those Victorinox tweezers make darn good tick pullers. I know, I know ... :barf: But when it comes to ticks, you don't want to mess around.

I'll also recommend the Hiker...
I like the alox Farmer, but to be honest, I really miss the small blade of my Hiker.
I probably use the small blade for about 90% of my cutting.

Stormdrane I like that lanyard for your SAK. Are there any instructions/sites to make that lanyard?

That lanyard was made using a 3 peg/nail knitting spool with the nails spaced about 1 inch apart to get that loosely spaced braid, and 'Type I' od green paracord. There's more info on my blog page to learn how to make it.

The SwissChamp is on the large/heavy size for pocket carry, similar in weight to a multi-tool which some folks manage to EDC in a front pocket, but would still be another option for use as a Camping SAK.

Stormdrane, your work looks great,I think Im going to have to try my hand at making a few lanyards for my saks, thanks for the link.

The Huntsman has what you need for the outdoors. For about the same tools but bigger and with a locking blade, look at the Outrider.

If i was limited to just one SAK it would be the Huntsman or Swisschamp. However i've also recently become addicted to Alox Vics.
In my backpack my sole SAK is a Huntsman. However my edc is currently a Alox Lumberjack (from Swiss Bianco) or a Farmer plus a Vic compact. I love aloxs but for me its just not complete without a corkscrew.weird i know lol!

However, more than one of the "ultralight" backpacking crowd carry a Vic Classic or Wenger Esquire as their only knife when afield.

I'll also recommend the Hiker...

Have to agree with this. I really like my Farmer, but miss the small blade. I also miss the toothpick and tweezers. I also have a Fieldmaster which is basically a Hiker with the addition of scissors. It's 4 layers, I don't find it too large for my front jeans pockets. I too have more use for a screw driver than a cork screw.

So my list would like like this, in this order:
Fieldmaster - 4 layer
Hiker - 3 layer
Farmer - 3 layer

I'll give another "vote" for the Victorinox "Ranger" SAK. It's handy, has a lot of useful tools/blades, and can be carried comfortably in a front pocket.

If you have a chance to handle one, might want to check out a Victorinox Hunter. At 111mm is is a bit longer thatn the standard 91mm Vics, but has a locking main blade. Some of the other 111's might be worth consideration too; this one has a wood saw, serrated "gutting" blade (good for tomatos haha) combo tool and corkscrew. I like it, but I would suggest taking a look at a 111 in person as they are a bit bigger. I like to carry these (or 108mm GAKs - harder to find) vertically in the back pocket next to my wallet.

I carry a Ranger or my 20 year old Climber every day, and I wouldn't hesitate to take either one camping. In fact, my Climber lived in my backpack for years.

You will probably be like most of us and buy several SAKs over time because they're like peanuts...you can't stop buying them. I think for camping you need to evaluate what you needs are going to be. Basics (Large blade, small blade, bottle and can openers, screwdrivers, awl). If this is good enough get a Soldier or Spartan. Need a wood saw get a Farmer, Camper or Hiker. Are sissors more important than a saw? Get a Supertinker. Do you need a sissors and a saw? Get a Huntsman or Field Master (Supertinker with a saw).

Whatever you choose your're sure to buy more!!!:D

Good luck!:)

No Lumberjacks on his website. He sold a couple of really nice limited edition Alox Lumberjacks (I think a total of 250 were manufactured for Swiss Bianco) on eBay a couple of weeks ago, but they went for around $100.

Pocket friendly camping SAK, IMO the best are still Farmer & Soldier.

there where 162 pcs made of the first run alox lumberjack, work on the next run, next year, some silver standart ones (most), splash (diffrent colors mixed), red, gunmetal, copperish, olivegreen and 10 pcs 24k gold plated (that ones not for sale) and still have some eco lumberjacks in stock and single pcs alox lumberjacks and others. check my newsletter.

for camping, i suggest an 91mm sak with woodsaw, scissors and the standart tools and maybe an minimum sak like the lumberjack as reserve.

silver (standart) alox if an soldier/farmer, easy to find if dropped in the wood and no color to scratch off easy. (the splash diffrent color will be ha3 on black and silver color, rest ha2)

I'll throw in the Huntsman. It was my only SAK and only knife for many, many years. It has the perfect array of woods/camp tools. The Outrider has almost the same tool array but in the larger, 111mm size with a locking blade. Not as pocketable though.

On second thought, Mike is right....
The Fieldmaster is probably the best pocketable camping SAK around.

The scissors are just too darn handy to do without when camping.
Great for trimming fingernails and toenails and for cutting fishing-line and moleskin.

You might consider carrying the Farmer with a 58mm Vic on your keychain, something like the Rambler (small blade, nail files with screwdriver, scissors, bottle opener with phillip's screwdriver and wire striper, tooth pick and tweezers) or Mini-Champ

LOL! You been in my pockets or what? I do have a Rambler on my keychain.

Great minds think alike!

I have used the same Victorinox for camping since 1985 but don't know it's model. Can anyone help me ID it? It was bought new in 1984 or 1985 in USA. It is/has:
91 mm
Black handles
toothpick and tweezer

On bottom: 3 tools: corkscrew, awl, and what looks like a flat screwdriver (about same dimensions as awl)

On top: lanyard hole & ring
large and small blades (large has the crossbow at base and says "Officier" but I don't if that means it is an officer model)
magnifying glass (gray plastic setting)
bottle opener
can opener
scissor
fish scaler
Phillips screwdriver
file

I would have sworn it had a saw but it doesn't. I think you'd definately want a saw if camping.

Anyone know what model it is? Thanks.

PS: I need pliers more often than a knife, so my EDC is now a LM New Wave, but whenever camping this SAK is always there, too.
