Hey all,
Would any tw90 owners post a quick vid of the flat platen
Just running through the speeds? You don't even have to grind anything.

I just got my second video of a Northridge and I would just like to compare them .

But no vids online are looking straight at the platen.
What I'm looking at is side to side wobble.

Thanks guys I'm looking to buy soon so any help would be much appreciated
Paul

TW-90 has perfect tracking, any wobble you see on one is caused by belts themselves. I often joke about them being "finish grinders", because IMO they don't have enough HP for the way I like to grind, but they sure are slick and smooth.

Any of the top end grinders have or are capable of such however, some just require adjustment. The advantage the TW-90 has over most other grinders is that it ships fully assembled and adjusted. I can adjust any grinder in minutes personally, so that's a non-issue for me.

Beyond all this Paul, I think you're running the risk of over researching at this point. You could be grinding knives by now. Just buy something already, there is no "perfect" anything, and after a point, it's just wasted time. No offense.

So if a grinder has a bad design flaw (northridge) you could adjust it in minutes huh.

No offense taken
Pacience is a virtue.

I'm looking to buy a great tool not an ok peice of crap

I got plenty of time to grind but no time to complain about a grinder that isn't doing what I need.

Trust me if you saw the videos I have of the northridge you'd be saying WTF

Personally I think it comes from The wheels that have the "cooling" grooves in them. ( EDIT: the wheels might be perfect but I believe the grooves magnifies any inconsistencies in the belt itself good idea but bad function )

PLEASE ENLIGHTEN me sir, how you would adjust that? Since you say you can and I'm not putting tape on a 3000$ peice of equipment out of the box)

Do you have a Northridge?
How do you even know what I'm talking about? No offense :)

My request was a simple one 30 secs of video from a straight on view point of the flat platen running that's all
I will be calling George about this issue later today

And in not trying to sound standoff ish in any way

Then show us

The other issue, besides belt wobble, is belt alignment on the platen attachment.

What I mean is - I can center the belt on the top wheel, and in my case (TW-90) it will be off-center on the bottom wheel by 0.02" or 0.03" (which I consider a negligible amount). Fortunately the TW-90 platen is adjustable so that it can be aligned independently from the wheels.

Also belt tension plays a huge role in wobble and alignment.

Nope, as I posted in your other thread, I haven't used a Northridge, it's practically the only modern grinder I haven't spent lots of time on. I haven't seen what you're talking about, although 99% of tracking is just about having proper wheel alignment, so I'd wager that I could fix it quickly.

If you'll recall from our previous discourse, I recommend a TAG grinder regardless, so don't think I'm trying to sway you on either of these grinders. I'm just trying to give you some friendly advice that there's a point of diminishing returns when it comes to "internet research" and you won't assimilate very easily with the community here if you spend 6 months making threads with requests for various information on grinders and never pulling the trigger. Not saying that's what you're doing, but bear in mind most of the people here answering your questions aren't in the business of selling grinders and get nothing out of it no matter what you buy, so you might be better off asking the manufacturers for videos.

I can understand your desire to do some research and be a responsible buyer but I don't think a video is going to tell you what you want to know.
Alan's video of platen shows the TW-90 tracking very nicely.
But I think there are several variables involved in making a grinder track smoothly etc.
I have 3 different grinders and have tried 2 others, frankly tracking never even entered into my mind, they all tracked just fine.

good luck

The tw90 is a great machine and is the most used tool in my shop. If you can afford one get it! I have also never had an issue with enough power, it has never bogged down even when hogging material.

Here is video of the belt running on the platen, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNpJB7oX9Vs

Thank you Allen if you wish I will share the northridge video with you for your opinion but the tw looks smoother

If you give me your Facebook I can forward it I'm not going to post the vids publicly because I was asked not to and I think of myself as honorable

And I understand that that's why I was waiting this long because other people I talked too where waiting.on theirs

So I figured I'd would be smarter just to wait a few weeks til they got theirs

Is this so dumb?

If you like I'll forward the video to you and 12345. I don't lie but I RESPECT others wishes

It's OK I won't ask about another grinder buying or quality related questions again.

Thanks for the helpful replies

If peeps wish to see the video I have permission to show it privately but not.post it on you tube or anything

Edit the amount of wobble is to me .
like cutting on a saw and not making sure the blade is square and plumb why do something if it's not going to be right this is my way of thinking and my opinion

I will ask George if it's possible somthing wasn't Mabey assembled right?
But 2 vids from 2 different people show the same thing

Right now, no one can contact you privately
If you go up to the top "settings" you can change your account to allow email communication.

I sent you a "visitor message" but those are all public.

I'd love to see that video.
Please send me an email.

FWIW, I saw the two videos, and the side to side wobble did seem a little bit excessive, especially for a $2700 machine. I've certainly seen worse, and some may think it looks minor, but there's really no reason a brand new belt shouldn't run pretty close to perfect if the machine is put together right.

Now, whether it was the machine setup, the belt, or not quite enough tension, it's impossible to say.

I'm sure it could be fixed, but I'd really like to know what the culprit is.

On the Hardcore, Tag 101, Tw-90 any wobble is from the belts not being cut straight and that happens on top of the Line, Norton 3M etc belts too.

Also in 20 years of this, I have never seen cooling grooves on a rubber wheel? There are Serrated wheels for a bit faster steel removal.

Some like them, I just put on a fresh Ceramic belt.

My Esteem doesnt vibrate or wobble at all, unless as stated above the belt is cut sloppily. When changing belts I just slap a new one on and start her up and everything lines up just like the previous belt. Nice time saver not having to adjust for each belt unless I want to shift it.
