Can anyone identify this knife?

This knife and sheath belonged to a veteran of WW2 who's son is a coworker of mine. My coworker found the knife and sheath when sorting through an old box of WW2 things that belonged to his father. He is wondering about the origins of the knife and sheath. I am somewhat knowledgeable on knife history but this one is throwing me. As you can see from the photos attached, it is quite an interesting piece. I will hold my opinions to myself so as not to bias anyone's thoughts but one thing to note is the mark on the center of the blade. I am not sure what it means. I can get more information or photos if necessary. As for the histor we do know...Here is a quote from an old email sent by the father outlining his journey and where he was. We do not know when or where he acquired the blade or if it was even acquired while overseas but its all we have to go off of.

"The best that I can remember we first were on New Caledonia (training) and assigned to Raiders second company as they only had four companies. We than moved to Guadalcanal and reorganized to the 1st Provisional Brigade under General Shapley. From there we invaded Guam and returned and formed the 4th Marine. Next we hit Emeru in the St Mathias Islands and returned again to Guadalcanal and became a part of the 6th Marine Division for our attack on Okinawa...."

If any of you have any suggestions on what the origins of the blade may be or where I could find out I would love to hear from you. My coworker would greatly appreciate having this mystery solved and I would love to help him. Thank you all for the help!

Thank you. Think I got it?

Nope. Hopefully somewhere on a page showing your pic on the photo hosting site you use (I use Photobucket....works like a charm), there is a "SHARE" part with some codes by or under it. And hopefully one shows something like

IMG: http://i196.photobucket.com/albums...picture.jpg where that http stuff is surrounded by
codes

Take that stuff that starts with
and copy it (hopefully your site does that by just clicking on that stuff....Photobucket does)....then just paste it in your post.

That's it!

You got any other info on it? Value? Age? Why he may have had it based on his military travels?

Fixed it.

That's not everything I need to know actually...considering the context, it should be apparent that I am looking for information on the knifes history and not just how much I can get on eBay for the knife...that isn't even mine by the way so the thread you cited does not completely pertain to me. . Thanks for being rude about it though. If you represent the rest of this forum then this forum completely misrepresents the knife community that is full of nice, helpful, laid back, and passionate individuals. I joined the forum to promote knowledge and passion in the knife world and am now considering leaving because of this. Back off please.

About "value" it is. Sorry, them's the rules.

It is clearly not because I am still left wondering what the value is...thanks for hijacking my thread though and bogging it up with your hall monitor...ness. Again, please back off so I can get some real answers from people who care about knives more than they do picking on a new user.

You cannot ask about value.

I believe language like that may also get you busted.

I strongly suggest reading the FAQ to get a feel for the rules we all abide by.

Taking posts from W&C into General is also frowned upon.

Enjoy your stay, and good luck with the mod staff.

Sheesh.
