Can I borrow your knife?

Lol. That’s funny and I had one! :)

If the boss ain’t gonna replace it, you may as well find a new job. Would you really want to work for someone who treats employees like that?
Well that's the way it was back then. Jobs were scarce so you just kept your mouth shut and did your job. But he was a horrible boss but the paychecks was good. I don't know what happened to him he got transferred somewhere and disappeared.

good morning gentlemen,
Curious if any thing like this has ever happened to you. We was on the job and the superintendent asked me can he borrow my knife. I said okay and gave him my knife. About an hour later he comes back with my knife. It was destroyed. I asked him, boss what did you do to my knife, he said I had to dig through some asphalt to do a density test. From that day forward if anybody ever asked to borrow my knife I would definitely always say NO. Buy your own.
. So what do you say when someone asks you if they can borrow your knife? Sometimes I find it hard to say no. But not after that experience.
The callousness of this supe is what bothers me most. He knew he was going to F up your knife, but he didn't care. He expected you to replace it on your own dime. To do that to a subordinate on the job, and not offer to replace it just shows what a POS this guy is.

Handed a dip$hit my leatherman ti charge while working on a volumetric cement truck. When said dumbass is done he tosses it into the spoils tank from the top of the truck. I became unhinged for a bit on the guy. Never again. People can get their own knives…

I would "let someone use my knife" if they are using it in front of me and I can see the task.

Otherwise, no. While most of us carry knives as tools, legally they are often considered weapons.
And I wouldn't lend out any weapon. There's no telling how that knife might be used. And if used,
what kind of legal issues I might unecessarily get dragged into.

No. People who don't carry a knife rarely know how to use one, especially a sharp knife. Same for axes. While camping in the Yukon a few years back a guy asked to borrow my Snow & Neely 3/4 bit Hudson Bay ax -- he wanted to smash apart a rotten log lying on some rocks. I made it a practice to split some additional kindling to offer people who wanted to borrow my ax.

My answer would always be "No". It happened few times with me and I learned my lesson.
That's why I usually carry 2 knives, one is always "working" knife that would be hard to damage.
If I really have to lend my knife for a moment, I'll ask what they'll use it for and just after that,
I'll decide if they can have it or not.

I (almost) always carry two knives: a knife i love and a SAK... i lend the SAK to people who need a knife. If i'm only carry one of my favorite knife, i don't have any knife to lend. If the SAK isn't good/strong enough for the job they want to do, ask someone else...

People usually don't give a f**k about other people stuff...

I like the idea of expensing that knife. You let this idiot get away with this and you’ve given him the green light to make you his b*tch. This is a power move on his part. Recognize it as such. He probably didn’t start out with the intention of destroying your knife but you better believe he is gauging your reaction. I’ve seen it time after time with bad bosses

I tend to just cut stuff for people that need it. I used to loan out a beater, but I got tired of being an insurance policy for people who don't want to commit to carrying a tool and learning how to take care of it.

Man that sucks. I would be pissed! Don’t know if you mentioned what kind of knife it was, but I just hope it wasn’t a high end very expensive one. In the future don’t let anyone borrow your knife.

Yeah he should have offered to replace your knife on his dime is CORRECT. Of course he should not have abused it to begin with but did not give a shit. Have noticed that with most people. Didn't care as long at he was messing up another's property.
