Can I borrow your knife?

This is the very reason why I believe most of us are hesitant to ever lend out our knives. Especially if you're a one blade a day kind of guy that doesn't also carry a user/beater. Funny how many of us think alike, when it comes to asking about what it is that "they" need cut. Half the time they want to cut zipties or something that dikes would better serve them for. When on a job, the Leatherman is always on me, I've lent it out a few times to subcontractors and always gotten it back in one piece. Luckily 🤞. I'm sorry to hear about your knife, it doesn't make it any easier it's someone who's above you or someone you have to answer to while the blade was one of the last of its kind. That's a shame

good morning gentlemen,
Curious if any thing like this has ever happened to you. We was on the job and the superintendent asked me can he borrow my knife. I said okay and gave him my knife. About an hour later he comes back with my knife. It was destroyed. I asked him, boss what did you do to my knife, he said I had to dig through some asphalt to do a density test. From that day forward if anybody ever asked to borrow my knife I would definitely always say NO. Buy your own.
. So what do you say when someone asks you if they can borrow your knife? Sometimes I find it hard to say no. But not after that experience.
Your boss is an A-hole.

For the most part I don't let anyone borrow anything anymore.

There used to be an unwritten code that whatever you borrow should be returned in as good, or better condition than when you borrowed it.

That ship has sailed.

Loaned a 4 wheeler once, it was returned dirty, scratched up, and had two flat tires.

Loaned a couple of trucks before, came back empty and dirty.

Loaned drums, was returned with a cracked cymbal and broken Tom head.

Loaned out a commercial scale, was never returned, had to drive to person's house, walk into their garage, and take it back despite asking for months.

Loaned a canoe, was told it was stolen, then found in three years later in some bushes behind the person's property.

Loaned a Spyderco GB2 to a colleague, who promptly used it to cut open lime bags and chipped the crap out of it.

Loaned out coolers, never got a single one back.

Loaned a table saw, never came back and the dude skipped town.

Heck, I even paid a "friend" to house sit while traveling, with the instructions to feed my dog and cat, and water my yard. Came home to find a pile of empty beer bottles next to a lawn chair, with the only green plants and grass within the sitting radius of the chair. Dog was fine, cat was missing. Found out later he hated cats.

I have finally leaned my lesson.

Holy moly you sure did lose a lot of good stuff. I know it's hard to say no but you have to.

There are a few people i will hand off my knife to. Some others i will offer to cut it for them. But if they have ever asked me what i need a knife for, questioned or complained about me carrying a knife in the slightest way, i tell them no and go back to whatever i was doing.

I used to carry a beater to lend out !!! Now I follow their ask with my own!!!!
If your not above me what are you?????? BeLOW me.....🖕....
No more painful knife lessons for me!!!

You mentioned your wife
I have a work Sharp tri stone diamond sharpener system, I tried to sharpen my wife's knives but she's very old-fashioned and sharpens her kitchen knives with a file no less. I don't have any idea where she learned how to do it but it actually works. She does not want a super sharp knife. Oh well keeps my diamond stones in better condition I guess. I just shake my head in disbelief it could be a Puerto Rican thing.?

Seriously, you need better friends (or fewer of them). I hope you got your cat back eventually.

Lol it's all good. I have a lot of friends and family, and try to adopt the mantra "kill 'em with kindness".

What goes around comes around eventually. I have far too many blessings in life to get too hung up on things like this.

But yes, I certainly don't lend stuff out anymore.

You are a better man than I am, for sure. I hope those people realize some day that it's a privilege to be your friend.

last time I handed my knife to someone, they went right ahead and stabbed a level III ceramic plate 3-4 times that someone was wearing with it. The time before that, the dude starts tossing it in the air, flipping and catching it telling me how it has good balance and would make a good throwing knife. I never seem to learn my lesson.
