Can I borrow your knife?

This is what I would be pushing for as well, replacement of your tool that was both misused and broken during it's use. Digging through ashphalt with a knife is stupid, and I've done some pretty dumb things with knives in the name of testing.

Either way, they damaged your property on a company job so they're responsible for the replacement.

That's a pretty crappy deal and if the boss doesn't take ownership of being an idiot and destroying your tool, I would be brushing up my resume' pretty quick.

And you get, “That knife did not cost that much!”

good morning gentlemen,
Curious if any thing like this has ever happened to you. We was on the job and the superintendent asked me can he borrow my knife. I said okay and gave him my knife. About an hour later he comes back with my knife. It was destroyed. I asked him, boss what did you do to my knife, he said I had to dig through some asphalt to do a density test. From that day forward if anybody ever asked to borrow my knife I would definitely always say NO. Buy your own.
. So what do you say when someone asks you if they can borrow your knife? Sometimes I find it hard to say no. But not after that experience.
If this happened to me - he'd be buying me a new one.

What was the knife that was loaned?

I used to loan folding box cutters without a second thought, but I generally don’t loan tools or cars or anything else. My grandfather drilled this into me when I was tiny. He’d learned not to trust anyone with tools. He used to dismount and hide his tablesaw blade whenever his brother came over. His brother was very well-off, but always wanted to borrow things and rarely returned them. Such a character.

I think the thing that would bug me the most is that there are better tools for that job…hammer claws, hammer and screwdriver, hammer and small wrecking bar or even a drill with a concrete bit. It blows my mind that a “professional” would use a knife for this asphalt task.

Got a photo of said knife?

No hell that was a long time ago. I just said nothing and bought a new one. I had to put food on the table. Wasn't worth losing a good paying job over. I threw The knife into a canal and figured screw it

Ah…what knife was it?

Too bad you didn't at least fuck up something of his belongings before going away.

IMO - it would be matter of principle.

Never stoop to that level, IMHO.

Have integrity and honor. Be different. :)

Nah!!!! Not.I said the fly.....That was just blatant on the boss' part. Nuthin professional about him I gather in any way , shape or form...

I always learn quickest when its painful, so did OP....That's just what Bossman needed too!

You my friend are a scholar and a gentleman!!!

My response to this question:

Maybe, but you'll need to answer a simple test first.

1) Explain the difference between a "choil" and a "guard."
2) Define "Wharncliffe."
3) Which color of stropping paste do you do most of your work with?

At this point, without exception, the person is looking at me like I'm crazy and/or an a-hole.

Desired effect achieved, and I can carry on with my day.

And that is why assholes keep being assholes - because they can get away with it.

I was nice to one guy in school that always tried to poke fun of me and kinda bully me... one day when he literally just went on to bully me I have decided that I had enough and long story short - asshole ended up with his nose and lip messed up and never bothered me again.

To be fair I warned him to move away from me and instead of taking the warning and leaving, he got into my face and asked "Or what", so I just grabbed his shoulders, pushed him and then pulled back, and gave him headbutt he'll never forget.

Not saying you should have done that to your boss, but saying you shouldn't have let him get away with it either. He knew what he was about to do and did it on purpose.

My answer is no. I never lend my knives to anyone. Exactly because other people will treat your knife like in the OP.

Jim
