Can I fix my drillpress?

This forum ROCKS , the information given by theses good people saved you a trip to the garbage dump.

I know my drill press is a taper shank (Craftsman benchtop). Anyone have a recommendation for a different chuck that would be a good upgrade to mount on the taper shank? Maybe one that is keyless?

I have always used the Albright and Precision Jacobs chucks, but they're $300-$500. I was needing to tool up a shop with a lot of drill chucks and I looked for a less expensive alternative (because I needed a bunch of them) and found the Technics, which are a knock off of the Albright. Having used them in production along side the Albrights for one year now, I can say they're working flawlessly. I never have a problem with runout and I'll grab either chuck with complete confidence. I even use them for reaming with short carbide reamers - a no-no that is working well. Check out ebay.

Well I don't see a slot so I am not sure about the taper anymore.
But I did like Rob suggested and made some test holes. With your help adjusting the drill, the results is more than good enough for my needs. Not building any aerospace stuff anytime soon.

Thanks again guys, much appreciated.

I've heard good things about Bison CNC precision keyless chucks. Also heard of se ridiculous deals on eBay for Albright chucks aslow as $150 mounted on a taper.

If you look closely at the chuck it should have the mount written on it around the same area where the size is written. it will be something like JT** or MT** or something maybe like 3/8-20 if it's threaded.

Yes Steve, I found that pic. Sadly no wings on mine. I'll leave it as is for now. Thanks for trying.

on a lark... open the chuck up and shine a flashlight up into it. is there maybe a allen head or cap screw holding it to the arbor?

No Jason, no screw in there. I did find a setscrew on the side and it lets you rotate a part of what is covering the chuck. More to investigate when time permits.

Thanks for trying.

Larry, now that you make me think about it maybe I can contact my Godmother to see if she could find the manual. The drill was her husband and he was a real pack rat.

Thanks

Patrice

A small update. I finally found the manual from my godmother.
It requires hitting the chuck using a brass rod. Since with the help of you guys I was able to get the runout to within acceptable levels I will leave it alone for now. But if it gets worse I know what to do.

Thanks again for all your help.
