Can I get a quickie education on the new Umnumzaan?

Something that might have been a bit more elegant would be to put it on the underside of the scale a la Will Zermeno.

I agree with most on here in that its ok, but it would be cool if it was machined into the handle. I love CRK and it won't stop me from purchasing one in the future, but I know without a doubt that Chris could improve upon the design.

Three others: change in detent hole in blade (change to through-drilled), change in attachment method for lugs, and changes in profile/access grind on lockbar for off-side access.

Did a little quick digging and found: change in Rc range for S30V blades; change to S35VN blade; changes in lockbar access cutout during S30V production; addition of LBS; various changes in markings (including Idaho Made, but there were some others). Glad I am not trying to collect 'em! :D

Horrible. Absolutely horrible! Added just so those that can't NOT mess around with it ruin it for the rest of us. Weird. I am sure this design will NOT stand the test of time or demand. There are a million better ways to pull this off. If anyone at Chris Reeve wants my opinion, PM me!

PS - love my non "de-stupidated" Umnum Tanto.

Wow, what was the RC range-change, up or down? Was it only with the Umnum, and how does it jive with all of the recent hullabaloo regarding RC hardness, edge-rolling, overall performance, etc. with the Umnum and Seb?

Thanks for researching this!

I don't think it looks particularly bad, but it doesn't look particularly good eaither. I still find it hard to accept that this was the best CRK could come up with.

^^^^^ I've read through the opinions here, and I think this pretty much sums it up for me as well. Ok I guess, but is that the best they could do?

Well Guys glad i got mine in Dec '10, mine all butter, s30v...I'm all good!! Umnum is one of my all time favorites!!!

Up from 55-57 to 58-59 Rc.

I had an early LH Umnu that went elsewhere because I didn't find it agreeing with me, ergonomically. I was fiddling with an October 2011 Umnu while buying a kitchen knife for my wife late last week and wound up buying the Umnu (again, RH this time). Interesting note - the first one I had developed, quite quickly, a significant dimple where the ceramic ball engaged the tang. Not so on this one!

And I've beaten my Umnum up... btw. I too developed a 'pit' in the lock face from the ball. At first I worried, but it seems to be pretty 'warn in' now. Opening not an issue. Edge retention not an issue. Everything pretty much excellent.

There has been no change in hardness in our folder blades, that was someone who filled out the cards wrong. Our fixed blades are 55-57.As for the changes that have happened with the Umnumzaan that is a normal process at CRK we are always making changes to our products. We have been making the Sebenza for 24 yrs and only a yr ago we introduced the grooves in the stop sleeve to prevent lint build up.We never just design and leave the the product out there like some others do .We do listen to our customers, sometimes it takes a while to get to it but we eventually do.

The cards - too funny. :D I wish I could say I'd never done something like that... :( :) Nevertheless, my early one did dimple significantly, and this one hasn't. The large number of little refinements over the first 2 1/2 years of this knife really make this late 2011 knife a much better, more polished knife than my early 2009 Umnu, though that's personal opinion. :)

I got a startac umnum for Christmas, date on card says march 2011, no disc, from my GF.

I remember making a fuss about the disc early November when I was gonna buy one for myself for my bday and I ended up not getting it.

Sorry about the disc I guess I cannot please everyone all the time.It needs to be there.

In my opinion, if you put your CR logo on the disc, people might not complain about it as much..it wouldn't look plain or too out of place. Either way, now that I've experience how awesome the umnum is, I'd be happy with another with or without the disc

In my opinion, i wouldn't put any kind of logo on the disc. I don't think you need another, "Idaho Made" headache. I'd like to see the disc machined in the handle(as someone said above)

I wonder if Kershaw would let CRK cut their lockbars on an angled bias like they did on the Speedform....

Just picked up a used S30V Umnumzaan without the disc and it's really everything I could ask for in a knife. Very well thought out and beautiful. It's a shame that they had to change it.

does that mean pre disc umnumzaans are inferior? i don't think the discs "need" to be there but that's just me....

+1. I'd rather that they punish just the customers who can't follow directions, not everyone. The problem is that a few people don't know how to care for their knives, not that the knives have a faulty design. I get that CRK wants to have good customer service while not getting screwed over, but every company has customers who complain about CS no matter what. I don't think CRK's reputation would suffer if they made the few people who are causing this problem accountable for their mistakes, rather than fixing their knives for free.

If anybody has a new Star-Tac with an LBS, they're more than welcome to trade for mine without it.

As long as it doesn't impede with use, they could put anything on there with proper reasoning.

The Umnumzaan is quickly becoming the best CRK I've ever used, it'd take quite a bit for me to make a sour face at it

I think the umnumzaan is just too good of a folding knife and can't see the upgrades / tweaks keeping me away. I will be picking up a back-up to my S30V non-LBS model once the funds are available - whether it has the new LBS or not doesn't matter.
