About twenty years ago alot of these groups were the bomb, they provided a feel good soundtrack of celebration and rebellion that you could bang your head to all day and night to. They were young, energetic, they had women galore, dated and occasionally married supermodels and centerfolds, and more or less had what appeared to be just really fun jobs.

Fast forward to now: They're all mad at each other, they're beating their wives and going thru horrific divorces, they're all fat and out of shape, they got alcohol and drug problems, they're making fools out of themselves doing things they would have NEVER done 20 years ago (like chicken dances and reality shows) I mean I look at guys like Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, there was that guy from Poison who recently got busted for DUI, and of course, one of the saddest sights to date in my book, Jani Lane on the previous season of Celebrity Fit Club, fat, depressed, and hooked on booze. Was this really the same guy who was the frontman for Warrant and was married to the girl from the "Cherry Pie" vid  ? When these guys actually do get together for a full scale reunion, they just don't have the same energy they did back then. Can anyone tell me what happened to these guys ? I don't get how this could happen to them. Either way, their music will forever be the bomb in my book.

Oh yeah, and for the record, I was born in the 80s, so I don't remember much about these guys when they were in their prime, but I do know that some of the best rock came from that time, at least in my opinion. Just don't see how they could become what they've become now.

Well a lot of it has to do with their lack of personal responsibility. A lot of them partied way too much and when the hard rock/metal trend ended in 1992 or so (whenever Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" broke into rock radio and MTV). When this happened, it was all over for them. I am honestly surprised that more of them aren't dead from all of the drugs and drinking that they did

Very few bands have kept all of their original members in the past several years. The only ones that I can think of that did are ZZ Top and Rush (the 1974 line-up of Rush).I am sure that there are some more, but I can't recall any of them.

I think many of them simply lacked the talent or motivation to continue playing. Ratt, Poison, Dokken, Slaughter, etc. After one or two popular songs, the talent well of most of these "pseudo-rock" hair bands simply went dry. And they were incapable of morphing their music sound to match the latest trends.

Some are still touring, singing their two-song lineup over and over again in small-town bars.

Most have simply moved on to new things. There was a "reality" television show on a while back. The producers would visit contruction sites and wherever necessary to find band members, who would then play a reunion concert.

Bob W, you make those groups sound like 1-hit wonders.

Ratt, Poison, Dokken, Slaughter, etc. had more than a couple of hits.

My thought is that time moves on. When you examine most musical groups, 5-10 years of intermittent hits is all you get. Changing demographics, the search for "new," and such things. Plus, success has its effect. (When a musician becomes an "artist," they need to disappear.)

Look at the Stones. Dozens of albums, but how many lasting songs? A dozen or so.

As for their current status in life, it's just an example of life. Not all people make good choices, life isn't fair, bad things do happen, etc.

Me, I still listen to Judas Priest, Krokus, AC/DC, en tal, along with Rob Zombie and a other high energy bands.

Do I regret the "passing" of many of my favored bands, sometimes. But then a new album will come out, and I'll realize that death is sometimes the best thing (better to quit at the top, like Guns n Roses). No bad, better to forget albums that way.

Talent abides.
Being the product of a media driven phenomenon will not.
Funny thing is we all get old & our bodies shift & change. Hair will fall out, waistlines will expand & if you're living in a self-delusional haze while fighting the little voice in the back of your head telling you that in fact you are a talentless hack... the booze & drugs may be the only thing you have.

Hi All-

Judas Priest toured last year and they sounded like a million bucks. Saw them five times and loved each show more than the last.

Yeh, now that Halfred is back, Priest sounds good again.

But their last album wasn't one of their best, but then again it wasn't totally bad.

But then, they got an honest score of good songs to their name.

A band that is even better live.

My music collection starts with AC/DC and ends with ZZ Top,though not confined to classic rock.
The 80's Rockers were a small flash in a very large pan,Kevin DuBrow:rolleyes: of Quiet Riot:rolleyes: tried in the 90's to regain popularity with less than optimum success. :barf:

The true measure of a band is how well they stand the test of time.

what happened to them? 25 years, people age, taste change, and just like spoiled children, they still want to be in the spotlight. The music business thrives on changing tastes, yesterday's stars fade away. In five years, do you think anyone will remember 90% of the music being played today/

I can think of a whole slew of bands who formed in the 80s that are still putting out good stuff:

Slayer
Iron Maiden
Sepultura
Danzig
Obituary
Morbid Angel
Type O Negative
Metallica (their 90s stuff sucked, St Anger was "better", now that their next album will be produced ala Rick Rubin (Slayer/Danzig) we'll have to see what they do)

Many of the hair bands are reuniting and are still touring. I have them to thank for getting me into heavy/death metal! :jerkit:

I finally saw Slayer last year! K King was quoted as saying “If I don’t hurt after every show then I didn’t perform well enough, I don’t want someone who saw us 20 years ago to come back and say we have slowed down."

Testament is still going, Metal Church just toured last year with I think the original line up and Exodus just put out a new album also. If I don’t have in a CD or a cassette:eek: , then I am on channel 27 Sirius sat radio.

Well not into much of the heavy/death metal stuff but I can say Iron Maiden is still going strong! Saw them 3 times in the past 3 years and they seem to be gettign younger with each show! They may be in their 50's but these guys can still play. What we need to do is get rid of all this crap coming out today and ressurect some dead musicians (John Bonham) and let the good times roll.

The 80s bands were formed by poofters with no staying power (big generalisation ;) )

Even Iron Maiden and Def Leppard were formed in the late 70s and most people think of them as 80s bands.

The real enduring acts date back to the end of the 60s, Clapton, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, the remnants of Led Zeppelin, the Stones, The Who...

As for the foreigners :D ... Hendrix was a 60s phenomenon and my favourite living American guitarist, Ted Nugent, was with the 13th Floor Elevators in the late 60s (I think...)

I guess we'll have to respectfully disagree on this one - "Diabolus in Musica" was a sore disappointment IMO :barf:. It was clear from the first song that they were out of ideas. I've heard that "God Hates Us All" is equally bad, but I don't plan to spend any more of my hard earned money to find out. Much like Metallica, once lameness sets in I just write 'em off. :(

There's always Mastodon I guess. :)

Well, I gotta agree that most of the big bands from the 80's did have history going way back (to the 60s in some cases).

But there lies the pattern. The bands that produced multiple hits in the 80s developed, evolved.

But then again, I suspect some of them was a time/technology thing. Akin to the scene in "Back to the Future," with the Van Halen guitar scene.

Also, as for new stuff, previous success can kill a good song by the "wrong" group. I'm sure AC/DC could muster up a Hip-Hop-esque (or whatever a lot of that new stuff is called) song if they wanted to. And what would we say - I'm sure it would't be overly flattering. But if they did it on the sly, it might become a hit. Look at Billy Idol (not my favorite artist, but capable). He has put out albums in various genres, with so-so success. Or, ZZ Top (early fans don't neccessarrily like their later stuff, and vice versa). Listeners expectations play a role.

Hi All-

Outlandish fanaticism for musical groups is driven by youngsters. It isn't so much that the bands are different as much as it is we're different. My favorite band of all time is Judas Priest and I can assure you I behave differently at their shows now (as a successful businessperson) than I did as a fourteen year old kid back then.

well Lou Gramm the lead singer of Foreigner , works out at the "Y" in my town in the mornings. Don't know what the rest are doing.

They're either all retarded from all the drugs and alcohol or they died from STD's. :D
