Can Someone Please Tell Me What Happened To All The Rockers From The 80s ?

Hi All-

That is unfortunate about Eddie Van Halen in the pictures above. He went through a divorce and suffered cancer in recent years. The most we can expect to do is take care of ourselves, exercise, and eat correctly. The simple fact-of-the-matter is that most of us will look significantly different in 2028 than we do now.

That dude from Twisted Sister has a weekly syndicated radio show called House of Hair.

Hi All-

The dude from Twisted Sister is the lead singer. His name is Dee Snider.

The 80s bands were formed by poofters with no staying power (big generalisation ;) )

Even Iron Maiden and Def Leppard were formed in the late 70s and most people think of them as 80s bands.

The real enduring acts date back to the end of the 60s, Clapton, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, the remnants of Led Zeppelin, the Stones, The Who...

As for the foreigners :D ... Hendrix was a 60s phenomenon and my favourite living American guitarist, Ted Nugent, was with the 13th Floor Elevators in the late 60s (I think...)

Roger

I'm with Roger on this one, there wasn't a lot of talent in those LA Hair Bands and they deseved to be plowed under when "College Radio" bands like Nirvana finally broke.

Hi stjames-

So you're willing to say George Lynch from Dokken, Vito Bratta from White Lion, and Warren DiMartini from Ratt weren't particularly talented musicians and should have been plowed under? You're a tough crowd.

Yes, I think a scorched earth policy would be in order. Please add Yingwe to the list.

Hi stjames-

What are your feelings about Zakk Wylde of Ozzy Osbourne, Rick Savage & Phil Collen of Def Leppard, and Jack Blades & Brad Gillis of Night Ranger? Whether you like their music or not, don't tell me they're untalented.

Don't forget Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. :D

:barf: Talentless hacks, each and every one. :D

What really bothers me is when someone with talent squanders it playing terrible music. Ken pointed out a couple, add Rudy Sarzo (sp?) or Steve Harris, Cozy Powell and Geoff Tate and you have a super-group that stinks to high heaven.

OK Ken, I'll look for this in W&C soon :D

Hi stjames-

Talent squandered on terrible music? Are you talking about musician capability or just personal taste?

Have you ever listened to Operation Mindcrime by Queensryche from first track to last? Geoff Tate is fantastic on vocals and the whole story as the main character disintegrates is great. They are clearly solid musicians...whether it is your cup of tea is open for conversation. There are lots of styles of music that I don't enjoy, but it doesn't make the artists hacks.

Why would this thread be heading for W&C if we're just discussing music?

It's heading to W&C because I'm starting to rant.

Yes, I am expressing my personal taste. I have heard Mindcrime all the way through and do feel the talented Mr. Tate could be spending his time better than Screaming In Digital. It is a much better album than Empire, the one that made them famous on MTV.

Very little of the music that came out of that genre stands the test of time, as opposed to the great hard rock acts of the 60's and 70's like The Stones, The Who, Hendrix, Led Zep, Deep Purple, or acts like AC/DC and Areosmith whose early work stands out over their more recent stuff.

Dokken, Stryper, Warrent, Poison, Ratt, QR, anyone who ever recorded a "power ballad" and head-banged in unison? Clown shoes, each and every one of them. I'll stick with Metallica, Motorhead, TRHCP, Jane's Addiction and even GnR.

Hair Bands? Give me a break.

Well I don't know man, We have a classic rock morning show, and all the request I hear for songs is usually something from the 80s, in fact, we have more programs on the Q that are dedicated to playing hair bands, I mean yeah they play stuff from the 70s and late 60s, but everyone calls in to here stuff like Def Leppard, Guns and Roses, Dokken, etc.

Hey man, you want to rant about some hair bands, rant about those early 90s groups who tried to keep hair bands alive and failed miserably. Groups like Extreme, Damn Yankees, Saigon Kick, Firehouse, Cinderella, Nelson, for people who liked hair bands, that was the last memory they had of the era, and it left a bad taste in their mouths :barf: . Heck, you rant about those groups and I'll even rant with you.

Hi stjames-

I'll grant that some of the 1970's-era bands have weathered better as far as we can determine right now. We'll have to see how some of the 1980's-era bands are doing in another ten years or so to compare equally. We want to see bands from both with thirty years on their respective odometers, right?

God knows there are a bunch of bands from those earlier years we haven't heard from either. What happened to those plaid-wearing dudes from the Bay City Rollers? S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night came and went for them, too.

I actually knew one of those guys personally, an English guy.

After his first big hit & the floodtide of cash, moved out of London into a mansion in Bath, built his dream studio inside

moved away from playing more into producing

very successfully

slowed things down, now produces and executive produces from time to time

relaxes
plays
enjoys his life

Cinderella wans't a early 90's band, they came around in the mid 80's just FYI.

Not my cup of tea but Bon Jovi was "the" hairband that is said to have started it all in the 80's, they are still together and the last album did well. Bon Jovi credits Aerosmith for the look and success of Bon Jovi, not many bands have been around as long, as successfully as Aerosmith even if it did take a rap group to get them re-kick started.

I think you can attribute Eddie Van Halen's appearance to the fact that he's a cancer survivor.

True, years of heavy drinking and smoking wore him down. He had a hip replacement in the late 90's. Surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his tongue, and then the chemo and radiation.

And Jon Bon Jovi! He's now a minivan driving soccer Dad! Yeah, he wears leather pants to the games...

Hi Centaur & NGK-Webmaster:

You're absolutely correct. How could anyone forget Bon Jovi as one of the premier 1980's supergroups that's still doing fine today. Another band from that era (although not a "hair" band) still topping the charts is U2. Each member of those bands is likely a millionaire a few times over.

Now Damn Yankees, there was a crying shame! When Terrible Ted, the Motor City Madman, signed up for that outfit I almost cried. There was another "supergroup" of total losers as well, Mr Big Hair, right?

And the Bay City Rollers were no Monkees, alright? :D
