Can the pocket clip ruin the folder for you?

Totally. The clip on the Kershaw Leek is probably the worst one in my arsenal, and it definitely prevents me from carrying it sometimes. It's too large, sticks the knife out way too far, and is even worse in the tip up position. Love the knife, hate the clip, and therefore hardly carry it. My favorite clips are small and at least relatively deep carry, like those on my SR2, CRKT 4514, Spyderco Southard, Mini Grip, etc.

Somedays, I just drop a slipjoint pocket knife in my pocket. Some knives should not have pocket clips.

I've avoided buying several knives due to their pocket clips. Many because they were only tip down, and several (especially kershaws) because it was just plain ugly .

Kershaw JYD was the most ridiculous clip ever, but it worked.
The bm 755mpr was the nastiest clip ever made; ruined pockets in short order, bm offers a newly-designed clip free, but it is still the worst knife I've ever had, bar none. Short, fat lead brick with a good blade. Waste of energy.

Working in an office environment I tend to prefer deep-pocket carry and discreet clips. For example - My Brous SS flipper is usually carried the most due to the pocket clip design. It doesn't scream KNIFE IN POCKET - though reactions surely are different when it flips open :D
I recently purchased a Ultratech because of the deep pocket carry option, as well as the clip being stonewashed and simple (blends well with jeans).

I prefer deep-carry clips for discreet and secure carry. With few exceptions, I will not buy a modern folder unless it comes from the factory with a deep-carry clip or if an affordable aftermarket deep-carry clip is available. Also, I prefer tip-up carry, but tip-down only is not a deal breaker.

Add the Zancudo to the list. Its clip is similar to the Leek's.

Tip up/down doesn't matter, neither does the clip finish because I can fix that. However, the placement of the clip matters a lot. If the clip is towards the middle of the knife (like strider) I don't like it because too much of the knife sticks up.

BJE: why don't you just take the clip off and bend it a little?

I dont care about the clip at all. I can orientate a knife regardless of position.

Short answer - no.

Longer answer - I like some clips more than others, but a clip (or lack of one) is never a deal breaker if I like the knife.

If you mean the lowrider clip STR made for your Southard, then I agree. If you mean the pointy shiny clip the Southard came with that tore into 2 pairs of my jeans, I do not.

Ouch, I guess I haven't had one long enough to hate it then. So far I find it small and deep enough for me, but now you have me concerned about the welfare of my pants. I'm watching you, Southard...

Yes, a clip can deter me from buying a knife.
I see that as a plus. ;)
While I understand makers like to offer options, I prefer my knifehandle not to look like "swiss cheese".

There are a few clips I havent been fond of. The main are the ones on the Kershaw Junkyard Dog series and I am not fond of the Leek/Blur clip. The one on the JYD to me was just too much. It wasnt enough to make me get rid of the knife though. I own 3 of them and on the 2 I usually carry I put ZT 560/550 deep carry clips on them using a single screw and they hold fine for me. The Leek and Blur clips for me make the knife ride high out of the pocket but I end up not carrying them for other reasons that would be off topic. :D

The only one that has ever made me get rid of a knife was on the Buck Marksman. The clip was so tight on the knife and the way the handle was designed it was really annoying to try and get out of the pocket.

I hate tip down. Otherwise I'd own a Millie and a bm 755. Besides, the ladies prefer tip up.

Other than a machete, I won't own a folder without a clip.
The clip can be removed but I find it handy.

I think it's almost universal that people hate the clip on the Kershaw Junkyard Dog. I tried using it, taking it off and I finally just put the knife back in the box and no longer use it at all. It's the only knife I've ever bought that I really couldn't stomach due to that stupid pocket clip.

And I'm not a fan of Spyderco's wire clips either. Oh, it has never kept me from buying a Spyderco knife I really like but, damn, a cheap looking, wiggly wire clip on a $100 knife is just nuts.
