Can We Cut It Out With The Racy Avatars?

Karl, I don't know if we can get a picture of Rosie that would fit as an avatar. Rosanne, maybe. Godzilla, OK. But I think Rosie is too ... ummm ... rotund.

Though I have nothing against the avatars that I see on this forum, I am reading a lot of comments about the rights we have to use whatever avatars we want. This is a privately owned forum and we do not have any rights here other than those that are given to us by the owner of the forum. The final say on what avatars are allowed has nothing to do with anyones rights, but with whether Spark considers them to be acceptable.

Well, if Spark hasn't mentioned any objections up to this point, I think we are ok. It wasn't until this one guy brought it up, that anybody even thought about it.

For whatever reason, I "do not have permission" to PM anybody...whatever.

Anyway, Ken:
What babe to you have as your avatar now? You always choose such good pics.

Warthog,

It's still Leann Tweeden.

I like naked women.

I like "racy" ,What is better than a beautiful woman,Colt 1911 and a Cuda Maxx?.

That's not the question.

Nobody is debating the attractivness of the women. The quesition is whether or not it's appropriate to display such pictures here.

If you don't like the avatars...turn them off.

Once again, turning off avatars only works for registered members. It's not a solution. Stop suggesting it.

At the bottom of the page it says "BladeForums.com is an adult site with adult discussions."

And on the opening page, it says, "Here you can discuss all facets of knives, from construction to materials to sharpening methods, all in a friendly environment..."

This is bladefourms.com, not picturesOfScantilyCladWomenForum.com. The topic of this site is knives, not avatar-babes. Things that distract from that topic, things that might cause people who want to discuss that topic to avoid this site, those things should be voluntarily removed because those gathered here have come for the purpose of discussing knives and because they want to discuss knives with as many knowledgable and intelligent people as possible.

And the question now becomes, do these pictures create a less-than-friendly environment for some people? Do these pictures discourage some people from coming here to discuss knives? The answer is in this thread: yes. People have said that the presence of these pictures does discourage them from coming here and discussing knives.

The purpose of this site is to discuss knives. Our shared goal is to attract as many people as possible who want to discuss knives and who have contributions so that we might have the best possible knife discussions. Anything (or anyone) that discourages people from coming or makes people uncomfortable and which is not part of the knife discussion works against the purpose of this forum.

Gollnick's a Liberal...Gollnick's a Liberal...

Now them's fightin' words.

Those who know me know that Gollnick makes William F. Buckley Jr. look like a bleeding-heart.

Well someone here uses a picture of a cat in their avatar and cats cause me tremendous anxiety. The presence of that cat makes this an unfriendly enviornment and Spark should order it removed.

How can I talk knives with that damn cat staring at me? I bet it will probably follow me home from work today and scare my children!!!!

What a terrible avatar!!!! My kids can never look here, ever!!

I'm sure that my avatar has offended someone, somewhere, at some time. Oh well. Sucks to be them. As stated, if you're offended, it's as easy as a simple click of the mouse to turn them off. When I see something come on tv that I don't like, I don't grab the phone and cry "FOUL!", I turn the channel or just completely turn it off. When I'm reading a magazine and see something I don't like, I turn the page. If this is the worst anyones kids are subjected to, they must be keeping them in a closet the rest of the time.

It looks like Political Correctness is winning another battle over common sense, maturity and adult decision making. But where is this going to end up? Logically, following this reasoning any discussion about using knives to kill/skin animals need to be curtailed, self defense discussions should also be inappropriate as peoples' local law enforcement are the only ones that should be carrying "weapons." Using bone and ivory in knife handles also shouldn't be discussed, definitely offensive to politically correct America.

If I'm to continue to carry a knife does that mean that if I'm not dressed/groomed according to BF standards that I'm a detriment to the knife community? If so, I guess that means that quite a few makers need to disassociate themselves from the knife world.

When going to knife shows, does that mean that after the show you can't go out and drink a beer? Thats definitely proving to the world that knife collectors are drunken, self destructive slobs that don't deserve to associate with the "decent folk."

Wait, I know what this is all about, Gollnick has just invested his life savings in a bow tie factory and is going to start selling BF uniforms. ;)

:D Gollnick,

As with any Liberal vs. Conservative argument there is rarely any resolved agreement....lol

No worries...you see, me being conservative I fully respect your right to your opinion and any replies from me in opposition are strictly dealt in good spirit.

Take care, Lefty.:p

I have no problem with any current avatars. There was one in the recent past that I didn't really like, but that member was soon banned anyway (and I just ignored that person's posts until then). I can see how the fact that you have to be a member and cookied to disable avatars could cause problems, but banning avatars is not the answer.

I don't know much about the software, but is it possible to reverse the avatar default from where it is now. This way, avatars would default off, and unregistered users would not see them. All of us registered members who like avatars could then turn them on and it would appear just as it does now. Can this be done? Is this a satisfactory solution if it can?

Gollnick,

If the avatars bother you so much why didn't you speak up earlier? Or did you just wanna hop on the band wagon?

Ha...The Bull (the name of the cat in my avatar) mocks you.
Fear him and his grey tabby wrath. Run in horror of his sleepy grumpiness.
;)

I now return you to your regular programing.

It's been my experience that guys that like stuff like this really haven't seen many REAL women in any state of undress.

I have... many times.

And my arguements have always been the same: these pictures are superfluous to the topic at hand. They create a poor public image and only reinforce negative stereotypes. And they discourage people who might otherwise make good contributions to the topic at hand.
