Hi gang, can you shoot me over your opinion, would appreciate it. Today I sold a knife here on BF. One member's "I'll take it" came in about a minute before the second one came in. Of course, I honored the first one, sent my paypal address and have been waiting a couple hours for the next comm or payment. Usually, I think nothing of giving somebody some time after they say they want the knife. However, the second person who sent in the "I'll take it" was standing by ready and willing to shoot payment over immediately and was in good communication with me, expressing his excitement about the knife.

I am not a greedy hardass, and although I work online and just about live on the computer, I know not everyone is as responsive as I am. Thus, I like to give people some time to make payment. What do you think? What is a fair amount of time to wait after someone says they want the knife and I send back payment information? And do I just override the first person and sell the knife to the one who ready to make instant payment?

Thanks!

Depends on the person, if they can monitor the thread, what kinda timeline for payment...

Most people pay immediately, because they want the knife now. Maybe he's at work for the next 8 hours, can't use his phone?

I would expect most would pay within 24 hours. Unless you have set up alternative forms of payment.

If you don't specify the response time in your listing, then I would agree with 24hrs mentioned above.

When I get two “I”ll take it” in close succession I always tell the second person that they have it if the deal falls through and then if it does, I hit them up before I re-open the sale.

As for waiting, I do think 24hrs is fair if there wasnt some other agreement. Also for the future you could put a note in your for sale posts that if payment is not made after X amount of time after an “I’ll take it, you will move to the second buyer and so on

As long as you are upfront about that I think its reasonable.

I pay right away. I am excited and most send the knife the next day or two. Sometimes they send the same day. I love this forum. I may have gone to bed before and then paid the next morning.

I personally wouldn't tell a guy it was his until he was ready to pay. If he said "I'll take it" but didn't communicate when he'd pay or that he was going to be offline for some period of time, I would go with the person who was ready.

Thank you. The buyer said, "I will take it, send me your paypal." i sent him my paypal and it has been about 3 or 4 hours. Normally, I would not think anything about this delay, except the other buyer is standing ready to pay immediately. What would you do?

For future reference, I typically write write something like:

First "I'll take it" gets the knife, with immediate payment expected

I don’t make an offer unless I am ready to pay right now. Expecting you to wait until it’s convenient “for me” is disrespectful to the seller.

Take the second offer.

I try to pay right away, but sometimes a seller doesn't get back right away. If I'm at work, go into a meeting, am an hour or two from bed, it might be later. I try to tell them of that though

As a seller I gave it through the next day of they've been offline

If he didn't pay by the evening, I would send another message for him to confirm he was still buying. If he confirmed I would go on that, but certainly expect payment within 24 hrs. unless otherwise notified.
On the reverse side of the deal, if I say I'll take and there is a reason I will be out of communication with the person, I let them know.

I really do agree with you. Maybe I am a little soft around the edges? The first guy just paid me, and said, "shit sorry, I just went out to dinner after I sent the DM. If you want to sell it to the other guy, I understand." So this is why I like to give people just a little slack. But I sure do like the "I will take it, and fast payment" idea, makes things very efficient!

Yes, this, as the buyer. If for some reason I cannot transfer payment immediately (this has never happened yet), I’d let the seller know when I expect to send it. As the seller, if I get two offers in close proximity, I’ll let the first respondent know that there’s somebody else waiting, please send payment in a reasonable time (ideally within 24 hours), and let me know when they expect that will be. As a seller, I certainly don’t like to be kept waiting in the dark, and I would absolutely never treat another seller that way.

When you post " I'll take it " you should follow up with correspondence . If you do not post I'll take it and just PM ,either way >> If you are going to delay the payment for any amount of time ,you should express this in the correspondence .

I should have given it more thought before I posted. I said that I don’t make an offer unless I am ready to pay right now but that has not always been the case.

My former workplace (I am semi-retired now) had a security block on PayPal. I can remember at least two occasions when I did in fact ask the seller to wait until I got home and could use my own computer to pay. I didn’t have a smart phone at that time.

So I am guilty of this as well. I gave the seller a 30 minute time frame when I would pay if he agreed. In both cases, the seller agreed and I bought the knives in the promised time frame.

I wouldn’t have made an offer without letting the seller know there would be a delay in payment but I’m glad this all worked out for both parties in this case.

Adding ," Communication is Key " This is basic forum behavior stuff

Now as the seller ,you have the right . If you feel for any reason the buyer has done / shown, whatever, you have the right to sell to whomever .

As a buyer ,if you do not communicate ,how do you expect the seller to know what's your plan.

This is basic forum / classifieds stuff

It's all about transparency, IMO.

When he says "I'll take it", he should let you know when he will pay at the latest. When you say "it's yours", I suggest you add "I'll hold it for you for XXX hours", You can even add "Held for XXX hours for USER" to your thread. Can be one hour, for instance, or even less. When you price aggressively, time matters.
