Can you de-assist a kersaw?

My brother bought a kersaw leek with a composite CPM-d2 blade. It is super sharp, good fit and finish, and I love the look of the "Harmon" on the blade. However, I can't stand assisted opening knives. I am perfectly able to open my own knife and people don't jump when I two hand open a knife in public.
So.....can you de- assist this knife? It would be a nice light carry knife to add to my collection if I could do that. Also, since we are talking about kersaws anyways, is there a leek that has a titanium frame (I am thinking about the lock actually)???

Thanks for the help!

The leek, no. It won't have any blade retention when closed if you remove the spring bar.

Some kershaws will work without the torsion bar, but not that one.

I've heard of people de-assisting the Leek and having no problems.
I'm not sure if the detent is as strong without the torsion bar, I'm sure it's not.
If anything you could always drill a detent hole if there isn't one.

I guess it doesn't hurt to try! Maybe my brother will let me try it on his before I get one lol

I can do it no prob. Just gotta drill a detent. Anyone with carbide can do it.

My deassisted leek would like to disagree. The blade is so light, you just tighten the pivot a bit and it'll stay closed just fine.

The Leek doesn't flip very well without the speedsafe since it doesnt have a detent. So far, the ones that I've tried and work well are the Blur, ZT350 and 0400.

I tried it with the leek, Doesnt work well. Ive pulled the spring out of a couple of my many Blurs. Honestly that knife is almost better without the spring, i still cant decide which i like better

....don't understand? Why f up a great design. I love mine. Great EDC. There are so many quality knives without spring assist ;)

If people are scared of a Little Leek they would freak if they saw me open a Tilt or 0561......niether of which are assisted

Personally I don't care about the assist. It's fine for opening, but I can't stand the rattle from it when the knife is open.

Rattle? Mine opens faster than an auto and the blade is tight (i.e., doesn't wiggle). Is that what you mean by rattle? If so, send it back to Kershaw.

When they come from the factory, the torsion bar is covered in grease to prevent the rattle, as I understand it. A lot of folks have found that, over time, rattling develops.

I've had a few speedsafe knives develop a rattle in that fashion. It doesn't affect the knife's performance at all, but some folks find it annoying.

I do like to de-assist my speedsafe knives because a) I don't find the assist function to be useful at all, and b) I get really tired of replacing broken torsion bars. IIRC, I've had to replace torsion bars in five of the seven speedsafe knives I've owned, sometimes multiple times per knife. The only reason the other ones didn't need to have torsion bars replaced is because they didn't see any use. In my experience, if you use your speedsafe knives, they will eventually need to have the torsion bar replaced. In my case, I've had some break in a matter of weeks, others in a matter of months, but it's just a matter of time. I took the torsion bar out of my Cyclone ages ago (after it broke for the second time) and I've been extremely happy with it. I just got a knockout and I'm thinking about de-assisting it, too - the speedsafe really doesn't add anything to the knife.

I owned my leek for 2 months and played with it constantly before deassisting, and it never rattled... Why is mine so special
