I ate crow ladies and gents and it sure doesn't taste good. Recently a forum member started a thread about whether or not he should use his mammoth and Damascus Sebenza. My sage advice was USE IT!

Well today a small mammoth and Damascus Sebenza showed up direct from the good folks at Idaho and umm, well , ahem....I'm pretty unsure if I could bring myself to carry it.

I've had Regulars, Classics, 21's, Annuals, wood inlays, plain janes, UG's, CGG's, mammoth, Damascus, etc and have found great joy in carrying and using them.

Something different here. I almost want to frame it and hang it on the wall. Maybe because it's too mint? This is the only piece I've gotten direct from CRK.

Anyway, first for me here folks. I honestly find myself in a bit of a dilemma.

Couple pics while I scrub out the taste of my foot.

I even have a small gold pin lanyard with a mammoth ivory bead that matches this sucker perfectly, but I don't want to take her apart!

Thanks for allowing me to vent!:)

For me at least, I'd keep this as a show piece, especially if you have other sebenza's to carry. Some will argue that owning a knife such as this is pointless unless you are going to use it. It's sooo nice though. This knife is def in my top 3 favorite sebenza's right after the hematite. Good looking knife man. Take good care of her. Also, that's awesome you got it direct from CRK. I put in an order for a 25 directly through CRK and it has been and is going to be a bitch waiting for months to get this. For some people the 25 represents the best CRK ever built, obviously this can be argued but I am damn excited to get it.

Well, since I'm the one that started that thread, I'll update you: I have not used mine, but I take out and fondle it every day. Mine has a more crackled, mottled coloration so it won't show stains like yours would. With yours, I would be very, very careful. It is a gem.

Ahh ... I said it ... easy to say "use the hell of it" when the knife in question is not yours :D:D:D

Don't feel too bad. I don't use most of mine! I wouldn't even dream about it!

Congrats by the way! She is beautiful!

Beautiful knife! I recently sent an e-mail to CRK about replacing ivory if anything happened to it. She said they'll replace the TI scale and ivory for about $200. So if that helps you to use it, go for it.

James, heed your own good advice and spit out the crow. That is one absolutely beautiful knife, with the exact shade of Interior Mammoth Ivory that I myself prefer. That knife is just too Special not to carry with you every waking moment of every day, to take it out at every opportunity and have it help you cut something, or share with those others who appreciate fine things. How could you possibly banish it to the prison of the dark interior of a drawer only to be appreciated occasionally when you have the time. The good folks at CRK made something Special just for you. They want you to have the enjoyment that comes from using a fine tool. If you still have doubts, call Chris. I am betting he will want you to use it and enjoy it. Because that's what he makes Sebenzas for! Give yourself the fun and pleasure of just having to reach for it any time you want to enjoy its unique beauty, you deserve that, and to have it with you always. :)

I carry and use that little Mammoth Ivory Mnandi that I got from you each and every day as my edc knife along with my Large U.G. Sebenza. I do not hesitate to put it to work for all kinds of chores and it just smiles and begs for more! Truly, the full enjoyment of owning a fine tool comes through the use of it.

Only time I take my foot out of my mouth is when it needs dried off a little!!!! Beautiful knife. Really beautiful.

This is a very good post! I still could not use most of the ones I call collectibles. I have my users.

Thanks Sarge! I guess I am more of a "user" than a collector, although I will admit to having more CRK's than I will ever be able to use. :D
Still, the ones I love the most are the ones I can just reach for and know they are always there to help me cut something. It's a very personal decision for sure! :)

While reading the posts I was starting to second guess my post in Locutus' post telling him to use it if it brings him pleasure, sure, I've used a few that others may not have in the 5 or 6 years that I've been collecting CRK's but lately I keep the nicer ones pristine and have several plain users for the daily chores.
You guys almost won me over with your fair and fine reasons why not to use certain knives, but then I read this post and I was reminded why I posted in the other thread to use it if it makes him happy and why I've used others very nice Sebenza's in the past.

I don't think that you have any crow to eat as you believed it when you said it, but I also agree with your change of heart.
That said, if using it would bring you joy I say use it and enjoy it.

Congrats on getting such a fine knife.

Okay, just one more shameless remark or three for my friend the "River Dweller".......

One day your wonderful little son, who is the center of your world, will when he is a man inherit this knife. What will he think when he holds it?

"This is Dad's knife. It is one of several he owned but this was a special one. It is still as pristine as the day he got it. For some reason he never used it, but kept it in this drawer."

Or perhaps......

"This is Dad's knife. He carried it with him every day. His hands sharpened the blade, and the Ivory has a special look where he held it in his hand to cut something. It shows some "character" from the things he did with it. This is Dad's knife, and I think of him every time I hold it."

Some day.........perhaps........ ;)

Great information:)

That is the color I prefer for my mammoth as well! I recently sold an amazing mammoth mnandi that was too beautiful for me to use, so I went through what you are going through now. Maybe you can carry it as a second knife just for show!

you're lucky to own one, my best one is a small ebony
It took almost a years to find and fund one. I'ts my EDC 90% of the time, it has been for the last 3 months, from the day I got it

life is too short to carry another folder (usually I say "a chinese" one, but we're on the crk forum..) so don't baby it, carry it!
if you don't want to use it too much, carry a secondary one to use more or for those "dirty" jobs

Maxx

Damn it man your getting to me! Your making alot of sense, fantastic sense in fact. Very well articulated and a sensible argument to use it, love it, keep it. I enjoy my knives by using them, as pretty as they may be at times the fun of a knife is cutting with it and marks tell little stories to boot. I just don't know though. Have yet to own her a day so we'll see.

Does my heart good to know that Mnandi stays by your side and gets some use.

As often as it happens you may be correct my friend:)

Thanks for all the comments everyone. You have given me a lot to think on. As of now I've opened it only once for pics. Hmm.

Gosh...that really is a beautiful knife. I actually came to grips a few months back that if I wasn't carrying a knife I wasn't going to keep it. Very hard decision, but I've sold a bunch of safe queens since and have shed a few tears. I've kept a lot of nice knifes that do rotate time in my pocket. There were just some I couldn't bring myself to carry for a variety of reasons.

I'd consider that one as a dress knife, not an everyday user. Carry it and lightly use it? Sure. For me, that would be a knife I'd carry wearing a suit or wear out to a nice dinner or wedding- that sort of knife.

Id think of that as a really nice Luxury car. Sure drive it out on nice days ect, but its not something you want to drive during a snow storm or to the lumber yard to buy fence posts with.
