Can You, My Friends, Help Me Get My Foot Out of My Mouth?

This is a profoundly interesting thread because it goes to the heart of why different knife enthusiasts collect knives.

It makes you think of your surface reason, and then your real reason. I've come to realize I collect primarily to own exquisite objects that have functional value. Aesthetics and quality are more important to me than owning overpriced box cutters. It is the fit, finish, and attention to details that gives me pleasure whether I carry and use a knife or periodically fondle it.

I have probably posted far too much on this thread already but this particular post is especially meaningful to me because it reminds me just why I choose the things I enjoy the most. It is for these exact reasons that I choose my knives, my flashlights, my writing instruments, and why I gain so much enjoyment from them. Well written and well said. We understand.......

At the risk of making your same mistake, I'm inclined to say use it. I'm not saying take it out in the woods and flog it, but use it moreso in a gentleman's setting.

RiverRat, that's perfection there!

I can't say whether you should use it or not, that's like telling me to use 'that' Night Sky'. Yes, I mean the Sapphire one. I may never be able to do it. But then, I'll never be leaving it to my child with the dilemma you have.

I do know one thing you need to do, post more pics!

Oh, and PM me when you want to trade it! :p :D

JJJJJJJJuuuussssttt to throw this out there:
anyone else feel spoiled that we are talking about wether or not to someone should use a $300+ knife???? Just a thought

Just use it. You know you want to. Get the pleasure out of carrying it, and enjoying it.

This!

Nothing wrong with just admiring it. Just like any other form of art. Of course, this is a personal decision ... all I am saying is, nothing wrong either way and you should not feel bad one way or the other.

As I mentioned earlier, I have my users and I have my collectibles. Just looking and admiring them (as one would a painting) brings me happiness and a certain measure of peace. Nothing wrong with that, right? In fact, it is pretty priceless to me.

That's an awesome piece you have there Rat:eek: That's grail material for me so it would only be a dress knife or would it. I know that I'd fondle it a lot and talk about it all day for a good month:D That one has some of the nicest caramel colors too, Congrats that one is indeed special!!

And if we are, so what? We earned the money for these knives ourselves, and don't have to apologize for that.

I also work very hard for my money and I sacrifice things just to buy the knives I want. With that said, a lot of people look down at people with money who buy knives but I believe that whether you have money or not, as long as you respect your knives and respect other members of the knife community I could care less what your financial status is. Also, I believe that people who spine wack their knives to try and discredit certain knives and companies do not deserve to have knives. Yes, they bought them with their own money and they could throw them away if they wanted to, I guess I just don't see the real world application and logic to basing a knifes safeness on whether it fails or passes the spine wack test. Sorry, I'm rambling at this point. For me personally, I baby the shit out of my knives but I do use them. Having just received my first sebenza, or high end knife for that matter, I'm taking every precaution to ensure that I don't scratch it but eventually it will happen and ill stop caring about evey little scratch I get on it. If I had a $700 sebenza with Damascus and inlays but had a plain sebenza to carry, you bet ur ass I'd keep that thing in a case. I'd probably end up using it but I guess it all depends on the person. If someone wants to use the crap out of a $1000 knife, that's awesome, if you want to keep it in a vault go right ahead. Again, I think as long as you have respect and knowledge about your knives and respect the knife community, I could care less about who you are and what u do with ur knives.

Use it. Keep in mind, that knife isn't truely yours, you are only looking after it for a while. Sooner or later it will be passed on and some one is going to use it. That user might as well be you.

Put it in a sock with a handful of coins. Shake for 30 seconds. Now, you won't be afraid to carry it. Just sayin'......

Well guys and gals I put her up for trade. If a no go I'll keep her boxed up and maybe gather the nerve to carry down the road. She's a beaut so we'll see. Thanks to everybody for your input.

As far as the spoiled comment, well for me atleast, I am grateful for everything I have. I am not a rich man nor one to take things for granted. Just my 0.02, for what its worth.

hey that's all i needed to hear, being an avid collector I sometimes forget how grateful I am to have what i have

good luck on the sale, wont be surprised of it goes quick

I think your dilemma is the motor to some collections.
I remember someone buying a special knife with the best intent to use it, only to shy away when that "beautiful" knife arrives.
So you put it away and the hunt is on for the next one.

IMHO there is nothing wrong to use a knife in the way that you admire it and not cut stuff with it.
For me the only reqirement is, that it has to be able to perform properly and not just look like (otherwise I'd only collect pics of knives).

I hope you haven't traded it!

You worked too hard, waited too long, and gave up too much to lose it.

You have an excellent reason to carry two knives, keeping one in a protective slip cover.
