Can You, My Friends, Help Me Get My Foot Out of My Mouth?

Well, since I'm the one that started that thread, I'll update you: I have not used mine, but I take out and fondle it every day..... It is a gem.

no doubt about that, Chris Reeve Does it right with the Damascus over here..... my grandfather owns one just like River Rats and only carries it when hes dressed up & going to town

BTW do you know how hard it is to get a Job with them!!?? i live 30 mins away from the manufacture building, i want to cry some days knowing im that close to something that great haha

I'd consider that one as a dress knife, not an everyday user. Carry it and lightly use it? Sure. For me, that would be a knife I'd carry wearing a suit or wear out to a nice dinner or wedding- that sort of knife.

Id think of that as a really nice Luxury car. Sure drive it out on nice days ect, but its not something you want to drive during a snow storm or to the lumber yard to buy fence posts with.

This is exactly what I was thinking. River Rat, I think you should use it, lightly. Everyone needs a dress knife, I couldn't think of a better one that you have.

I vote dress knife. That and keep it on the coffee table so you can fondle it whenever you want.

My bud, I can appreciate your apprehension in deciding to carry it or not. It is a gorgeous folder.
I don't think I could carry the beautiful inlay that I got from you, so how could I carry a Mammoth?
There were lots of good comments here today. The coffee-table/church knife sounds pretty good. It seems like a waste to let it sit in a safe for 30 yrs. Of course, I've done that with certain handguns, so whom am I to talk?
It's such a NICE problem that you have, sir.

Damn it man your getting to me! Your making alot of sense, fantastic sense in fact. Very well articulated and a sensible argument to use it, love it, keep it. I enjoy my knives by using them, as pretty as they may be at times the fun of a knife is cutting with it and marks tell little stories to boot. I just don't know though. Have yet to own her a day so we'll see.

Does my heart good to know that Mnandi stays by your side and gets some use.

That pretty little Mnandi is nestled in my pocket right now! When I received her from you I polished out the few minor scuff marks on the clip you told me about, then noticed the Mammoth Ivory was too attractive to put the clip back on! She carries a razor edge these days, has her own special leather case, and works for me everyday from opening the mail to fixing lunch.
She is a pleasure to spend time with and I appreciate having her.
Thanks again. :)

Mnandis are just a little small for me to use, which is why I'm switching to small Sebbies. But I guess I've changed my tune and now think that some knifes are more art than tool. I'll probably change my mind again after a while. A tough call. Everyone says "use it" then when you put one up for sale people expect pristine. There may not be a right answer to this question. Just depends.

A very beautiful knife you have there friend.

And an even tougher decision to make.

My $0.02, take it out with you on special occasions.

I find it hard to keep knives that I have no intention of using, only admiring. A knife like this is truly special and I am by no means saying to use it and use it hard like you would say a regular plain sebenza that we all see with tons of scratches. But there is nothing wrong with carrying it, cutting envelopes and boxes of those new to you CRK open with it and other light edc chores. Then all the while, to enjoy it and perhaps show it off a time or two.

I have been carrying my large 21 bocote I got last week with me daily. I have used it to open bills, and packages that came my way including my new to me small 21 lignum vitae ( will post pics SOON ), among other things. I have been carrying it in the included brown slip sheath and the knife is starting to mold itself in nicely. Am I going to go out and cut shingles and tar paper with it, NO, but I am using it and enjoying it. You like me pretty much have the luxury of having several sebenzas so it makes it easier for us to carry that certain sebenza for that certain adventure.

Use it wisely and enjoy it.....!!!

DONT USE IT!!!

USE SOMETHING ELSE!!

It's ok to keep something nice, just to fondle and admire. Use another blade for edc!

As of now its been opened once. I haven't even been fondling it! WTH?!!! This is an entirely different experience guys and gals! Hell of a good problem to have though:)

This is a profoundly interesting thread because it goes to the heart of why different knife enthusiasts collect knives.

It makes you think of your surface reason, and then your real reason. I've come to realize I collect primarily to own exquisite objects that have functional value. Aesthetics and quality are more important to me than owning overpriced box cutters. It is the fit, finish, and attention to details that gives me pleasure whether I carry and use a knife or periodically fondle it.

^^^ agreed. It's incredibly difficult for me to enjoy a fine knife if I don't cut with it and have it in my pocket. Personal preference ofcourse, but this has been a weird day. Thrilled and lucky none the less.

You need to take that baby out and do some batoning with it ASAP!
