Can you recommend me a fixed blade based on these requirements?

I'm looking for an all-purpose fixed blade knife for survival, hunting, and tactical use. I have allotted around $400, it doesn't matter if it costs a lot less though.

-I would prefer the knife not have a coating because I read that it effects the cutting ability and the taste of food cut with it.

-I have hands on the smaller side, so I'd like a handle that isn't too big. This is one reason I'm hesitant to buy a Fehrman, the handles on their knives seem a little too big.

-I don't want a Busse because I dislike the marketing. I'm sure they're fine knives, but from what I've seen companies that are intensely into marketing tend to be overpriced. Busse to me is in the same category as MercWorx, Cold Steel, Stryder, and Dark Ops with the way their marketing is. I especially dislike the nuclear logo and titles. I'm not a tree hugging hippie, but I like hunting and nature and nuclear waste isn't something I want to have associated with my knives.

Now you've done it....that busse comment...

If I was you I'd try a fallkniven f1 or one of their fancy ones...

falkniven f1 w/ leather sheath for around 100 or chris reeve mountaineer II yes it's coated but never have had a problem

+1 to our custom makers, you can get just what you want and then some with your budget.

You mentioned small handle, but may I ask what size and style blade do you prefer?

Get a Fallkniven F1 and save your money for other stuff---or go custom. Dunno how many custom makers coat blades, though.

I also don't know if you really need a coated blade if you choose a stainless steel. The taste thing is, in my experience, only something the happens with carbon steel knives.

I would also suggest that you take a look at our custom makers that we have here. We have some amazing makers.

Well you have the Custom makers left sense you crapped on some of the best knives in the market without having a clue what you are talking about, Busse and Strider. :jerkit:

I love my breeden warthorn. Great knife!

Fällkniven S1 or F1 with zytel sheath.

I've a S1 with the zytel sheath & this knife follow me everywhere,i wish i had bought the F1 with the zytel sheath too because i don't like the (big)flap over leather sheath.

Check out Stomper over in the W&SS section...He makes some sweet blades he is also in the makers section as JK handmade knives
This is the one he just sent me :D it's his "LOBO" model, 6" blade of 01 steel 3/16" thick x 2" wide blade, Maroon micarta w. brass pins. Built like a tank !
He can put what ever handle color or material you want !

Once a company starts making any of their knives in China or Taiwan, they are dead to me. Even if they only make 10% of them there I don't care, I will not buy their knives. So Spyderco is out.

That looks nice. What kind of steel is it and how much does he charge?

You mentioned small handle, but may I ask what size and style blade do you prefer?

I want a blade made of high quality steel and medium sized, built for hard use.

As for Falkniven, they look like their blades are a bit too small for me.

I'm thinking about the Shadow Scout from Fehrman. This model and the Peacemaker look like they have smaller handles than their other knives. I don't need a really small handle just that some knives seem to have gigantic ones that look too blocky.

As for Falkniven said:
than take a look at the Fällkniven A-1 (approx 6½'' blade) or A-2 (8'' blade)

Or a Bark River Bravo 2 (7''blade).

For production knives Bark River K&T & Fällkniven are hard to beat.

Bark River has just about every kind of blade size, shape, & handle variety you can think of.

The knife is 01 steel & the price is $165.00 for the basic model...depends on the handle material. Go to his web site & contact him for more info. He has a few openings left for Dec.

Fällkniven, Bark River, RAT Cutlery... All good, high quality manufacturer with plenty models.
