Canada

Is it THAT difficult sending stuff to Canada?? How about going to Mexico.... I'm surprised that the NAFTA still means Canadians must pay import tax, I thought it's like we have inside the EU no taxes between countries?

Having said that, here's an anomaly: it was cheaper for me to get a Spanish Aitor knife from the USA rather than getting it from another EU country Spain! Swings & roundabouts I suppose.

Shipping to Canada is not that difficult as long as the buyer takes care of the taxes and the knife is legal, i.e. the blade is good and tight and can't be flicked open manually and, of course, isn't a prohibited type like a balisong, push knife, auto or has something obscene on it like "down with socialism". Duties are rarely exacted on nonAmerican knives but again that should be the purchaser's problem, and losses and theft by mail do happen but aren't that common. I lost a couple of Busses in the mail years ago but most customs agents aren't that smart to know what is worth stealing. Ridiculous shipping and "brokerage" charges do happen, especially by UPS Ground so be careful what method you choose and if you ship UPS you have it coming anyways.
The truth is that people who only sell to CONUS are just intimidated by the awesome superiority of Canadian bacon and maple syrup and the shiny buttons worn by the RCMP. They're just being goofs and hosers, although that's their choice, eh? ;)

There is no import tax on US made knives, we do have to pay GST of 5% plus 10 dollars in " service fees". Luckily it happens very seldom at least to me.

I think you have to take a little time, establish some history. Sellers are never concerned about deals that go right, but what recourse do they have if it goes wrong. So, if it's an auction site or a fellow forum member, they are more willing to deal with a "established" member on a individual basis.

Unless the buyer is a known reprobate -- a vanishingly rare creature in snow country -- I don't hesitate to ship to Canada.

There are two points to keep in mind. As HJK said, be sure the knife is legal in Canada, and use the right shipper: USPS hooks up with Canada Post. Be patient: Canada Customs is not overstaffed or paid extra to hurry. (You wouldn't believe how slow US Customs can be :()

When someone says they will accept all risk, they aren't speaking for PayPal. Don't go for it, dot those i's and cross those t's. If the buyer says you can ship to his buddy in Detroit, fine -- make sure that Detroit address is on the buyer's PayPal account. Or USPS will deliver to his buddy who will ask, who me?

Not likely, this usually happens with countries I wouldn't chance anyway. But go by the rules. Go to the stickies in the FEEDBACK forum and make sure you know how-to.

Remember, all you CONUS-heads, a horror story about non-delivery to India or Russia is no reason not to ship to Canada, or even to Quebec!

Two of my recent transactions have been with our cousins to the North and they were both pleasent. I'll trade, sell or buy from you guys any day. Screw me over and I'll hunt you down and hurt you.;) No stress for me. ((Joking...kinda.))

Ha! Thanks for the laugh and although I've not dealt with you I appreciate this attitude.

Also, Thanks to all folks in the U.S that are open to dealing with us Canucks.:thumbup::thumbup:

I've personally shipped to France, The Netherlands, Greece, and Australia with no issues so let the good times roll I guess.

I just got my Canadian education, I usually don't ship outside of the USA, I just sold a couple knives with advertised free shipping, I forgot to list only for sale in the USA in my sales thread, I got a reply from a Canadian that he would take 2 knives if I would ship to Canada, I really felt obligated being that I didn't list USA only so I said sure why not. When I agreed I requested $5.00 extra for shipping thinking I would be covered. When I went to print the label in PP there are only to choices to ship to Canada, Priority mail or Express mail, I selected Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box, That's what I normally use $5.80 with tracking & $50.00 worth of free shipping, Only one difference, to go to Canada it's $19.95 Needless to say I got killed on this deal. In no way was it the buyers fault, he gave me what I requested. I want to make that perfectly clear. Can't say if I will ever do it again…..

A simple way is to specify "shipping at cost"

There are aplenty website that will give you a good estimate of what these will be.

You did the seller a solid by honouring the deal in the first place. As a Canadian he might have made up the difference, and apologized to boot :). Next time, if you feel like giving it another try, just specify buyer to cover actual shipping costs. No reasonable person would refuse that.

Thats what I do. If it doesnt specify US only, I ask if they will ship to Canada and instantly offer to cover any and all extra costs at the post office. It helps put the sellers mind at easy and makes things go alot smoother so they dont have to come back and ask for more later. If they dont already know how much it costs to ship up here I let them know its usually around $20 and more if extra insurance is needed. It only takes a couple minutes to find out the costs on the USPS or Canada post sites.
