Canadian Customs Seizing Knives

I was just trying to flick open some of my knives and wondered how many of these customs officers actually cut themselves....I would be pissed off too

It depends on the detent and how tight the pivot is...

They shouldn't be flicking knives open anyway, WTF does that prove?

FYI:

I posted this earlier in the thread, but have the pivot tightened to where the blade will not open.
If that's not possible, it's a risk, but the next best thing is to have a cable tie hold the blade in...

Just make sure the shipper puts it on gently so they don't ruin the finish.....

Again....What does being able to wrist flick a knife open prove?
Is it now more dangerous than any other knife in the wrong hands????!

I'm quite interested in Canadian law as I always try to abide by it (Even when law enforcement fails to) so JR88FAN would you happen to have a link perhaps to the CBSA's guidelines as to what they allow? Also is that a verified thing that customs operate not upon Canadian soil? if they don't why do we allow this foreign power to operate on our behalf?

JR88, take a breath man. It'll be okay. Customs services in every country operate at the "border" so there is sort of a neutral territory by law, but as a practical matter, its that countries soil. Just like an airliner that takes off from Canada, is considered Canada until it lands and is cleared in a new country. Its been that way for that past few hundred years. Its weird, but how else could you land in Cancun without an airport at the border? Also, Customs are fully accountable to Canadian law. Thats how it works.

The surveillance is true, but has nothing to do with Customs. It has to do with the probable deny-ability that they are "mostly" spying on foreign nationals since airports are a place to find lots of them. A total lie, but has to do with CSIS not Customs. And that comes from pressure from CIA and NSA for Canada to play ball. Blame it on Harper, but don't get your conspiracy theories mixed.

We could have it worse. Some places just having an "illegal" item with your postal address on it is grounds for a court hearing or worse yet, jail time. At least we get that much. It sucks that so much of it is up to discretion, and I would like it if the law was clarified. But that isn't going to happen, so the best is to be informed.

Finally, as to your statistics rant. Most of the problem is data collection. The doc at the ER only cares if the wound might still have something in it. No one cares what it was, and maybe the cops find the weapon and put it into evidence. Otherwise its straight up, that guy stabbed that guy. Go to jail. Its not all Law and Order: Great White North. Next, even if you could get perfect data, what would it do? Buddy-boy Harper just burns good science, so that won't work. Most Canadians will one, never be part of a violent crime, also never be effected by a flicky-knife law. So who would care. Its not baby seals out on the ice, there is no proof that allowing you to have a 500$ blade is going to cause any prevention of harm.

Its sucks, I know. But be glad you can get what you get, and carry what you can carry. Educate yourself and help others learn what changes can be made. But spinning out of control on conspiracy theories doesn't help you or anyone else. Is CSIS spying illegally? Yes, and they got caught, now we need to keep the pressure on to make sure they don't go back to it when they we have our backs turned. Is the RCMP abusing wire-tap power, you bet they are. And again, we need to tell our representatives that its not cool. But that works. They will get the message eventually. You just might not get the knife you want.

All borders between Canada and the USA are 'neutral' so you are in neither country until you pass through.
Google it!

No offence my friend, but this attitude of 'be happy with what you have, take a deep breath and relax'

This is the attitude that allows freedom and democracy to slowly erode.

I can never be happy with anything that does not allow for transparency and a full democratic process...

This is Canada man, not China. We are a Democratic nation, and that should not be 'sometimes' it should be all the time.

I am not asking for anything more than what should be guaranteed to me as a citizen.

Good luck getting a law changed that has been in place for 50 years. I have never seen a balisong, an automatic, or a push dagger. Even in a "democracy" there are rules.

+1 this will never change....maybe the policies will be better one day but the law will not change

Another thing that will not change is Bladeforums rule on political discussions. We allow that only in the Political Arena. Since this thread is no longer about how to comply with Canadian import laws, I am closing it.
