I'm a believer in "store what you eat and eat what you store". Here is a sample of what you might find in my kitchen.
Various dried goods

- Cereal
- Rice
- Pasta
- Beans
- Peas
- Lentils
- Oatmeal (assorted mixes)
Canned goods
- Beans (assorted)
- Mushrooms
- Pea soup
- Tuna
- Fruit (assorted)
- Crushed tomato
Frozen goods
- Meat
- Fish
- Frozen Veggies
- Frozen meals
- Ice cream

- Frozen bread
Fresh goods in the fridge

- Condiments
- Spices
- Cheese, cold cuts
- Pickles and other jars of preserved veggies
- Potatoes, onions, eggs, carrots, yams

- Juice
Unfrozen foods

I figure I'm good for anything from a few weeks to a few months without leaving home. What I want to illustrate here is that you can't just go stocking up in one big shopping trip and think you are good to go. Three weeks of ramen noodles will destroy your will to live. Variety is the spice of life.
An alternate power supply will keep the freezer running until power can be restored. Multiple ways to prepare the food with or without power.
I don't really see any situation lasting longer than that but hunting, growing, and gathering are all possible if necessary.
