Cannibalism

Mad Cow Disease is another term for it. and it's ugly.

In humans Mad Cow disease is called Crutchfield Jacobson disease
However they are both caused by prions
I mean MC disease, CJ disease and Kuru also cronic wasting disease they are all however, spongiform encephalopathies

why did you go 9 days without food? Medical procedure?

Nasty little parasite. The first four days were doctor's (naturopath) orders. I did alot of research into hunger (as you could imagine) which led to fasting info, which inturn, led to the 9 days, total. I have since learned of better ways to cleanse one's self without fasting.

This past Summer, I went for 2 months without food, from a starting point of being quite underweight. Two weeks sitting in a boat around the Dominican Republic doesn't seem that long, from a starvation standpoint. However, I don't know the details of their ordeal. Further, they might have had neither any idea how long they could live without food, nor any idea how long they'd be adrift.

We talk about them being desperate based on a book knowledge of how long you will live without food - how long have YOU gone without food.

For me - about three days - and I don't want to repeat it often.

I'm glad you chimed in, Evolute..... I was looking for your thread to post a link.

During the Age of Sail, desperate sailors resorted to cannibalism enough times that it was not looked down-upon by society. Just an accepted method of survival.

If i was hungry enough I would eat human. I would really want to cook it first though.

Meats meat and a man’s got to eat.

I think many of us here would not shy away from eating Human flesh in a survival situation.

Maintaining ones strength and keeping the brain thinking straight is often the difference between being a survivor and a victim.

No offense, I'm a medical professional and I've never seen that sort of weight lost that you indicated 25 lb in 3 weeks unless patient had cancer. Its impossible to lose 25 lb in 3 weeks if you were underweight to begin with, perhaps a lot of water weight? How did your skin and hair get better? Usually when you lose that much weight that fast hair starts to fall off and body goes into survival mode.

i've think throughout history there have been people who ate other people in dire circumstances, but this situation is far from dire given the fact they were in open waters

No offense taken, but it was just as I said, regardless of your anecdotal experiences or beliefs or authoritative pronouncements.

I do tend to have an unusually large appetite, and lose weight fairly quickly. I do have health issues which I could tell you about in a private message, if you really care to know. I am sure that some portion of it was water weight, but, but obviously not that much.

Why would this not be a dire circumstance? Two weeks, floating, floating, floating no rescue in site. I think that is pretty dire. I've been on boats in big water before. I can relate to calamity - two weeks is a huge amount of time. Louisianna went to pot in 3 d.

Two weeks in open water on a fishing boat and you can't catch any fish especially when you got tons of rotting bodies laying around. How long do you think its going to take sharks to show up in the atlantic ocean chomping on dead bodies? I'm still very curious how 33 people died in 2 weeks if they had water.
